Bryson claims national honors for mile run

Emily Bryson - USTFCCCA Division III National Runner of the Week - Fourth Fastest Mile in Division III History

WALTHAM, Mass. –  Brandeis University senior Emily Bryson of Quincy, Massachusetts, has been named the Division III National Runner of the Week by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Bryson was honored for her performance at the Fast Track Last Chance Meet at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y. At that meet, she lowered her own school record in the mile run. Competing against Division I, II and III competition, Bryson won the race in 4:45.58, lowering her mark by 1.10 seconds. The time is the fourth-fastest in Division III women's history. Bryson's next closest competitor at the meet, from Division I University of Pennsylvania, was just under three full seconds behind.

This is the first time Bryson has been honored by the USTFCCCA for her indoor track performance. She was also named the Division III National Cross Country Runner of the Week as a rookie, when she captured the University Athletic Association title in Franklin Park. It also marks the first time the USTFCCCA has honored a Brandeis athlete with their weekly honor for indoor track and field.

Bryson is a six-time All-American, including twice in track and field. Last year at the NCAA Division III Championships, she won the 3,000-meter run and helped the Judges come in third in the distance medley relay. Bryson, along with twin sister Julia Bryson, first-year Devin Hiltunen and senior Doyin Ogundiran are currently ranked second nationally in the DMR. Emily is ranked eighth in the 3,000-meters this year.

Bryson and the Judges will host the University Athletic Association championships this Saturday and Sunday, February 23rd and 24th. The UAA championship web site can be found at http://www.brandeisjudges.com/tournaments/2019UAATrack/index. The NCAA Division III Championships will be held at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston on March 8 and 9.

Bryson is a 2015 graduate of North Quincy High School.
