WALTHAM, Mass. – Four Brandeis student-athletes have been named University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week for the week ending January 27. Senior Emily Bryson of Quincy, Massachusetts, was honored for women's indoor track and field, while seniors Leon Rotenstein of Ashland, Massachusetts, and Joanne Carminucci of Brewster, New York, were honored for men's and women's fencing. Junior Eric D'Aguanno of Saunderstown, Rhode Island, was named for men's basketball.

Bryson received the UAA Athlete of the Week honor for the fifth time in 2018-19 and the 18th time in her Brandeis career. She was recognized for her performance at the Boston University John Thomas Terrier Classic, where she placed third overall in the mile run with a time of 4:49.68. Bryson trailed only two runners from Division I schools Syracuse and New Hampshire. Hers was the fastest mile of the season so far in Division III by two seconds. Last year, Bryson won the Division III title in the 3,000-meter run, becoming Brandeis's first national champion in nearly two decades. She is currently ranked fourth nationally in the 3K.

Bryson and the Brandeis women's track and field compete at the Cupid Challenge at Tufts University this weekend.

This is the third UAA Fencer of the Week honor of the season for Carminucci and the second for Rotenstein, who have been recognized 10 and three times in their careers, respectively. Competing at the second Northeast Fencing Conference meet of the season at Brown University on Jan. 26, Carminucci was 12-0 in the foil, while Rotenstein 11-1 in sabre. Both Brandeis teams went 4-2 at the meet, with losses to Brown and Boston College and wins over Vassar, Tufts, Dartmouth and Rhode Island. The men's sabre squad was 6-0, while women's foil was 5-1.

The Brandeis women meet Wellesley College tonight, January 29, in Wellesley, while both teams are at MIT for the Eric Sollee Invitational on Sunday, February 3.

D'Aguanno earns UAA Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the first time in his career. He guided the Judges to a 1-1 week by averaging 19 points and four rebounds per game while shooting 60 percent from the field (12-20) and 64.7 percent from 3-point range (11-17). In a 92-59 road loss to Emory on Friday, January 25, he had 17 points and two rebounds, hitting 5-of-8 from beyond the arc, then followed it up with 21 points and six rebounds as the Judges won 75-69 at the University of Rochester. The Judges overcame a 12-point first-half deficit to win at UR for the first time since 2010.

For the season, D'Aguanno is third on the team in scoring at 10.8 points per game. He is second in the UAA in 3-point percentage at 43.3% and third in total 3-pointers with 52. D'Aguanno ranks 50th in Division III in 3-point percentage and 99th in 3-pointers. The Judges are 11-7, 4-3 in the UAA. Under first-year head coach Jean Bain, they are in the midst of their winningest season since 2013-14. The Judges meet Emory again at home on Friday, February 1, and Rochester at home on Sunday, February 3.
