Five Judges named UAA Athletes of the Week, April 27

WALTHAM, Mass. – Five different Brandeis University student-athletes have been honored as University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week for the week ending April 24.

Senior Lauren Bertsch of Middletown, Rhode Island, was honored as the Women's Tennis Player of the Week. In her final career home match against cross-town rival Bentley University, Bertsch went 2-0 as the Judges defeated the Falcons, 9-0. She won, 8-5 at #1 doubles and 6-3, 6-1, at #1 singles. This is the second UAA Player of the Week honor of Bertsch's career. Bertsch is a 2017 graduate of LaSalle Academy.

Senior Anupreeth Coramutla of Monroe Township, New Jersey, was recognized as the Men's Tennis Player of the Week. He went 3-1 for the Judges as they won both of their matches last week. Against Division I Merrimack on April 20, he produced a 6-3 win at #2 doubles and a 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 win at #1 singles to earn the clinching point in the final match of a 4-3 victory. In a key regional 6-3 win against Tufts on April 25, Coramutla won 8-5 at doubles to give Brandeis a 2-1 lead. In singles, Coramutla, ranked third in the region, dropped a 7-5, 6-2, decision to top-ranked Boris Sorkin. Brandeis is ranked third in the Northeast Region, while Tufts is ranked fourth. This is his third career UAA Player of the Week recognition. Coramutla is a 2017 graduate of Phillips Academy.

Junior Sydney Goldman of Sherman Oaks, California, was named UAA Softball Pitcher of the Week for the third week in a row and sixth time overall in her career. Goldman continued her fine season with two more wins and complete games and one more shutout. On April 23, she blanked Salem State, 8-0, with 11 strikeouts in five innings of work in an 8-0 win. The only hit Goldman allowed was a leadoff bunt single. In a 5-2 victory over Johnson and Wales on April 24, Goldman saw her scoreless innings streak snapped at 25 with a seventh-inning home run, but still defeated the Wildcats, 5-2, with six Ks and six hits, two walks, and two earned runs, just her second and third of the season. Goldman leads the UAA with an 0.57 ERA, ninth-lowest in Division III. She and the rest of the Brandeis pitching staff lead all of Division III with an 0.74 ERA. Goldman's 12.5 strikeouts per seven innings are fourth-most in the nation. Goldman is a 2018 graduate of Notre Dame High School.

Senior Luke Hall of Georgetown, Massachusetts, was named the UAA Baseball Hitter of the Week. Hall, a catcher, scored runs in all three games last week for the Judges, reaching base in eight of his 11 plate appearances. In a 9-1, rain-shortened, five-inning win over Anna Maria on April 21, he walked twice and was hit by a pitch, scoring two runs. In a doubleheader sweep of Lasell on April 24, Hall went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a home run in the opener, driving in four runs as Brandeis won 22-1. In the nightcap, he drew one more walk and scored one more run. Hall led the team in runs scored and was fourth in RBI for the week. Overall this season, Hall is hitting .362 with 17 runs scored – second on the team and seventh in the UAA – with 14 RBI as the Judges have a 12-3 record. This is his second career UAA Hitter of the Week honor. Hall is a 2017 graduate of Georgetown High School.

First-year Haley Nash of Delmar, New York, was named UAA Softball Hitter of the Week. Nash, who plays third base for the Judges. She led the Judges to a 4-0 week by hitting safely, scoring, and driving in runs in all four contests, as the Judges swept doubleheaders from Salem State on April 23 and Johnson and Wales on April 24. Nash had home runs in her last three contests to finish with a 1.500 slugging percentage for the week. She also walked twice, reaching base in seven of her 12 plate appearances (.583 OBP). Nash is now tied for third in the UAA with a team-leading five home runs this season. Her five hits, five RBI, and six runs scored all led the team last week. With a .939 slugging percentage overall this season, Nash ranks 13th in Division III, while her 0.42 home runs per game rank 10th. With their four wins last week, Brandeis improved to 12-0 on the season, making them one of four undefeated teams left in Division III. Nash is a 2020 graduate of Bethlehem Central High School.
