WALTHAM, Mass. - Brandeis University seniors Jessica Chapin of Mendon, N.Y., and Terrell Hollins of Springfield, Mass., have been honored for their play on the basketball court on Feb. 5 and 7. Chapin was named University Athletic Association (UAA), New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Player of the Week for the second week in a row, earning UAA honors for the third time this season. Hollins was named UAA Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks.
Playing at Case Western Reserve University and Carnegie Mellon University, Chapin led the Judges to a 2-0 week by averaging 27 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2.5 steals. She shot 53.8% from the field (14-26), 69.2% from 3-point range (9-13).
In a 65-56 win at Case on Feb. 5, Chapin had 18 points five rebounds and five assists in 34 minutes, hitting 5-of-11 from the floor, 2-of-4 from 3-point range and 6-of-9 from the line. Two days later, in a 59-50 win over Carnegie Mellon, Chapin set a pair of school records scoring 36 points (9-15 FG, 7-9 3FG, 11-13 FT) to erase the previous mark set by Pam Vaughan '90 twenty years ago. She also set a school record with seven 3-pointers, needing just nine attempts. She scored the team's first 11 points and then 15 of the last 16 to help blow open a four-point game. Chapin added four steals, two boards and an assist against the Tartans. She also tied a school record with her sixth career game of 25 or more points.
Chapin is now the UAA's leading scorer, averaging 17.8 points per game, more than 2.5 points more than the next-highest player in the league. She also ranks third in the association with 2.4 steals per game and is tied for second with 1.9 3-pointers per game. She has helped the Judges to a 13-6 record, including 6-3 in the UAA, good for third place in the conference. Brandeis is two games behind sixth-ranked Washington University and a game behind the University of Chicago, but host both foes this weekend.
Hollins was selected as the UAA Player of the Week for the fourth time in his career. Hollins averaged 15 points and 15 rebounds per game in a 1-1 week for the Judges, recording his eighth and ninth double-doubles of the season, including six in a row. He also had five assists and two steals.
In a 63-61 loss at Case Western Reserve on Feb. 5, he had 13 points and 11 rebounds, hitting 5-of-8 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the line while also contributing two assists and two steals. In a 62-43 win at Carnegie Mellon on Feb. 7, Hollins had 17 points (5-14 FG, 7-7 FT) and 19 rebounds, tying for the highest single-game rebound total in the UAA this season. Eight of his boards came on the offensive glass and he also contributed three assists. With the win, Hollins and fellow seniors Andre Roberson, Richard Magee and Kenny Small earned the 76th victory of their career, making them the winningest senior class in Judges' history.
Hollins is 10th in the UAA in scoring, averaging 12.4 points per game, and ranks second in rebounding at 9.5 caroms per game. He also tops the circuit with a .581 field-goal percentage. Hollins has helped the Judges to a 15-4 record overall and 6-3 in the UAA, in second place. The Judges, who were ranked 19th in the nation in the most recent D3hoops.com national poll, trail third-ranked Washington University by two games in the UAA standings and host the Bears this Friday at 8 p.m. before taking on the University of Chicago at noon on Sunday.
Chapin is a 2006 graduate of Honeoye Falls-Lima High School. She is the daughter of Michael and Deborah Chapin, Mendon, N.Y.
Hollins is a 2005 graduate of Longmeadow High School. He is the son of James Hollins and Karen Hollins of Springfield, Mass.
