Brandeis earns three UAA Athlete of the Week honors, Jan. 25

WALTHAM, Mass. – Three Brandeis student-athletes have been selected as University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week for the week ending January 23, 2011. Senior Grayce Selig of Narberth, Pa., was recognized for the women's track and field team, while seniors Anna Hanley of Medford, Mass., and Adam Austin of Dix Hills, N.Y.,  were honored for men's and women's fencing.

Selig, a two-time All-American was selected as the UAA Runner of the Week for the second time this season. She improved her season-best time in the mile run by placing third at the Greater Boston Track Club invitational at Harvard University on Jan. 23. Selig's NCAA provisional qualifying time of 4:57.99 was the fastest in the UAA this season, as well as the fastest in the NCAA Division III, according to the Direct Athletics national ranking list.

Hanley, also a saber fencer, earned her first UAA Athlete of the Week of 2010-11. She went 15-1 to lead the Judges to a 5-1 record at the second Northeast Fencing Conference meet of the season. The Judges defeated Boston College (14-13), Dartmouth (20-7), Tufts (19-8), Brown (14-13) and Smith (19-8) while falling to Vassar (12-15). Hanley won two of three against Brown to help the saber squad to a 5-4 win, while guiding the squad to a 7-2 margin over BC in a pair of one-point wins. She leads the Judges with 39 dual-match wins this season. Brandeis wrapped up their NFC schedule at 10-2 this season, tied for second place with one more meet to go for several other teams.

Austin, a saber fencer, was honored as UAA Men's Fencer of the Week for the second time this season. He went 9-2 in the saber at the second Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) meet of the season, held Jan. 22 at Brown University. The Judges went 2-3 overall, defeating Dartmouth (18-9) and Tufts (15-12) while falling to Boston College (12-15), Brown (12-15) and Vassar (10-17). The saber squad posted a 3-2 overall record. Brandeis is 6-4 in the NFC and 7-7 overall this season, while Austin is 38-4 on the campaign.

Selig is a 2007 graduate of Springside School.

Hanley is a 2007 graduate of Lexington Christian High School.

Austin is a 2007 graduate of Commack High School.
