Judges earn three UAA Athlete of the Week honors

WALTHAM, Mass. – The University Athletic Association selected three Brandeis student-athletes for University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week honors for the week ending February 6, 2011.  Senior Lucia Capano of Manchester, N.H., was recognized for the women’s track and field team, while seniors Anna Hanley of Medford, Mass., and Jon Rollock of Gilford, N.H. were chosen for women’s and men’s fencing. 

Capano, placed second in the triple jump at the Tufts Stampede on Sunday. She qualified for the New England All-Division championships with a distance of 11.17 meters, just .08 meters off a Division III provisional qualifying distance. She also placed eighth in the long jump with a leap of 4.68 meters and 12th in the 60-meter dash in a time of 8.33.

Hanley, a saber fencer, posted a 9-4 record in the saber at the Eric Sollee Invitational hosted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her top performances were a 3-0 mark against second-ranked Penn State University to account for three of the team’s five points, and a 2-1 mark in a win over UAA rival NYU. She also won her only bouts against Yeshiva University and Hunter College. The Judges finished 3-3 on the day with wins over NYU (15-12), Hunter (23-4), and Yeshiva (23-4) and losses to Penn State (22-5), eighth-ranked University of Pennsylvania (21-6), and Duke University (23-4).

Rollock, also a saber fencer, University posted a 12-4 mark in saber at the Eric Sollee Invitational hosted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The senior went undefeated against Yeshiva University (2-0), NYU (3-0), and Hunter College (2-0). He finished a perfect 3-0 record against fourth-ranked Penn State University, accounting for nearly half the team’s points against the Nittany Lions. The Judges finished 2-4 with wins over Hunter (19-8), and Yeshiva (24-3) and losses to UAA rival NYU (10-17), seventh-ranked Pennsylvania (8-19), fourth-ranked Penn State (7-20), and ninth-ranked Duke (4-23).

Capano is a 2007 graduate of Manchester Central High School.

Hanley is a 2007 graduate of Lexington Christian High School.

Rollock is a 2007 graduate of Gilford High School.
