WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University junior Alex Stoyle of Goffstown, N.H., and rookie Caroline Mattos of Providence, R.I., have been selected as University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week for men’s basketball and women’s fencing, respectively.
Stoyle, a forward, was honored for the first time in his career. In the Judges’ 1-1 week against UAA foes, he averaged 21 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots per game. He hit 74 percent from the floor (14-19) and 64 percent from 3-point range (7-11) while making all seven of his free throws.
In a 72-67 win over Emory University on Friday night, Stoyle led Brandeis to victory with his first collegiate double-double, scoring 27 points and grabbing 13 rebounds, both career-highs, while also blocking three shots. Stoyle started the game on fire, scoring nine points and grabbing seven rebounds in the first 10 minutes of play. He had 14 points and eight boards by halftime and finished shooting 9-of-12 overall, 4-of-7 from 3-point range and 5-of-5 from the line.
Two days later, the Judges, ranked No. 25 in the nation by d3hoops.com at the time, faced top-ranked Rochester, falling 66-59. Stoyle had just two rebounds and no points in the first half after picking up two early fouls. Despite that, he still finished just short of a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds. Stoyle went 5-for-7 overall, 3-for-4 from deep and 2-for-2 from the line with seven boards and two blocked shots in the second half as the Judges cut a 14-point deficit to one but could not claw all the way back.
Overall this season for the 15-5 Judges, Stoyle is averaging nine points and 5.4 rebounds per game, fourth and second on the team, respectively. He also leads the squad with 13 blocked shots.
Mattos, a first-year foil fencer, earned UAA honors for the fourth time this season. Competing at MIT’s Eric Sollee Invitational, she tied for the team's best record at 11-4. She went 3-0 in a UAA match against NYU, a 15-12 Brandeis win, and against Haverford and Stevens as well. In addition to their win over NYU, the Judges also defeated Haverford (17-10) and Yeshiva (23-4) but fell to Stevens Institute of Technology (16-11), Duke (20-7) and Pennsylvania (20-7).
Overall this season, Mattos leads the Brandeis women with a 63-12 record. The Judges are 15-9 as a team.
Stoyle is a 2010 graduate of Tilton School. He is the son of Rick and Kathy Stoyle, Goffstown, N.H.
Mattos is a 2012 graduate of LaSalle Academy. She is the daughter of David and Diane Mattos, Providence, R.I.
