WALTHAM, Mass. – Three Brandeis University student-athletes have been selected as University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week for the week ending March 31. Senior Casey Ducinski of Duxbury, Mass., was named Pitcher of the Week for softball, while sophomore Carley Cooke of San Diego, Calif., was honored for women’s tennis and rookie Mitch Krems of Thousand Oaks, Calif., was recognized for the men’s tennis team.

Ducinski was named UAA Pitcher of the Week for the first time in her career. In four contests last week, she went 2-1 with seven strikeouts and a 3.00 earned-run average in 14 innings pitched. She also went 4-for-10 with two RBI, two runs scored and her first career home run at the plate.

Ducinski opened the week with complete game loss at Wellesley on March 27, when she allowed just two earned runs, striking out three as the Judges had just three hits on offense in a 2-0 defeat. She bounced back to win both ends of a doubleheader against Emerson College on March 29, tossing four innings both times, allowing four hits, three strikeouts and one unearned run in a 10-1 win in the opener and six hits, four earned runs and one K in a 12-4 nightcap. Her round-tripper came in the second game against the Lions.

For the season, Ducinski leads the Judges with a 5-2 record and 3.08 ERA in the circle and is hitting .324 (12-37) with six RBI and seven runs scored at the plate. Brandeis is 9-8 overall this season.

Cooke, the 2012 UAA Rookie of the Year, earned her second career UAA Player of the Week honor. In the only match of the week for the 23rd-ranked Judges, Cooke was a double winner in an 8-1 victory over Babson on March 27. She won 8-5 at No. 1 doubles with senior teammate Faith Broderick of Washingtonville, N.Y., and 6-4, 6-1, at No. 1 singles.

A 2012 All-American, Cooke is 4-3 overall this season in dual matches at first singles and ranked eighth in the Northeast Region. She and Broderick are 3-3 in dual matches and ninth in the region in doubles. The Judges own a 4-4 record as a team headed into this weekend’s Nor’Easter Bowl tournament.

Krems was honored by the UAA for the second time this season. In Brandeis’s only match of the week, a 6-3 win over Babson on March 28 that started outdoors and finished indoors, Krems was one of two double winners for the Judges. At No. 3 doubles, he and sophomore teammate Michael Secular of Bronx, N.Y., were 8-3 winners. In singles action, Krems played No. 2, his highest position in the ladder of the season. He trailed, 5-7, 3-4, when rain forced the match indoors. At that point, he won nine straight games to take a 5-7, 6-4, 6-0 victory that earned Brandeis's fourth point.

Krems leads the Judges with seven dual-match wins at every position on the ladder from from fifth to second. He is also 3-8 in doubles action playing in both the second and third positions. Overall, the Judges are 5-6 this season. They are currently off until April 11 at Division I Bryant University.
