Brandeis puts five on All-New England Soccer squads
WALTHAM, Mass. – Five members of the Brandeis University soccer teams have been selected to the 2012 National Soccer Coaches Association of American (NSCAA) and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England All-Star teams.

For the women, sophomore forward Dara Spital of Miami, Fla., was a first-team All-New England selection by the NSCAA to go along with her third-team All-America honors (see previous press release). Classmate Alec Spivack, also of Miami, was an NSCAA second-team and ECAC first-team selection.

For the men, senior Sam Ocel of North Attleboro, Mass., earned first-team All-Region honors from both organizations, to go with his third-team All-America recognition (see previous press release). Senior back Joe Eisenbies of Hingham, Mass., also earned first-team All-Region honors from the NSCAA and ECAC. Senior forward Lee Russo of Westford, Mass., was named first-team All-ECAC and second-team All-New England by the NSCAA.

Spivack was a second-team All-University Athletic Association selection as a midfielder/back. She finished the season with one goal and three assists for five points. Two of her three assists came on game-winning goals (Sep. 1 vs. Clark, Sep. 24 vs. Wellesley), while first career goal was the only score in a 1-0 win over Lesley University on Oct. 18. Her defensive prowess helped the Brandeis women set a school record this season with 14 shutouts.

Eisenbies earned first team All-UAA honors as a defender. In his first season as a central back after three campaigns as a midfielder, Eisenbies helped the Judges record 10 shutouts in 22 games. He also contributed a goal and an assist for the season.

Russo, a second-team All-UAA selection, was Brandeis’s second-leading scorer in 2012, finishing with 12 goals and a team-high nine assists for 33 points, one behind Ocel. He scored four game-winning goals on the season, including a dramatic overtime winner against MIT on Sep. 9 and a UAA strike against Washington University on Oct. 14. Russo also assisted on three of Ocel’s game-winning goals, including an NCAA tournament second-round game, when his service led to the goal with 29.4 seconds left in regulation. Russo graduates ninth on Brandeis’s career scoring list with 32 goals and 19 assists for 83 points.

The Brandeis men’s and women’s soccer teams completed a historic 2012 season in which both reached the NCAA Division III tournament. The men, who were ranked No. 13 in the nation at the end of the season, posted an 18-3-1 record and advanced to the Sweet 16 with wins over Baruch, 2-0, and Vassar, 1-0, before falling to Williams, 1-0, in the sectional semifinals. The women were 16-5-2 after advancing to the Elite Eight of the tournament, defeating Union, 2-1; Lasell, 3-0; and Cortland State, 2-1; before bowing to Misericordia, 2-0, in the sectional finals.
