Four earn UAA Athlete of the Week honors for Dec. 10

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University track and field and swimming and diving teams swept the University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week honors for their respective sports for the week ending on Dec. 9.

For the track and field team, junior Vincent Asante of The Bronx, N.Y., was honored for the men’s team. Asante, running at the Reggie Poyau Memorial Invitational, Brandeis's only home meet of the season, won the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.52 seconds. Asante ran a 6.55 in the prelims and then set a personal record in the finals. His time translates to 7.01 seconds in the 60-meter dash, ranking him sixth in the nation in Division III in the event according to directathletics.com. Asante also finished third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.21 seconds. Asante is a graduate of the High School for the Arts, Imagination and Inquiry.

Junior Amelia Lundkvist of South Portland, Maine, was recognized for the women’s track and field team. She was the runner-up in the mile run at the Reggie Poyau Invitational. After a late charge, Lundkvist finished the mile just 0.04 behind a competitor from Division II UMass Lowell with a time of 5:25.78. Her time is tops in the UAA and 19th in Division III. Lundkvist is a graduate of Cheverus High School.

For the swimming and diving teams, sophomore Max Fabian of Keene, N.H., earned the honor for the men. Fabian continued his fantastic season with three wins in a tight 138-128 loss to Clark University on Dec. 8, all coming in different disciplines from his normal distance freestyle events. Fabian captured the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:06.30, won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:25.25 and the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:27.18. The closest of Fabian's three races, the 200 breast, was still decided by more than a full second, with his 400 IM win coming by more than 15 seconds. Fabian is a transfer from Connecticut College in his first year with the Brandeis swimming and diving team, which this year returned to action after a two-year hiatus. Fabian is a graduate of Oak Meadow High School.

On the women’s swimming side, senior Holly Spicer of Northampton, Mass., earned UAA honors for the first time in her career. Spicer, a captain of the women’s squad, continued to impress in the breaststroke, winning both events in a 172-118 loss to Clark. Spicer captured the 100 in 1:09.49, a margin of four seconds, and the 200 in 2:35.26, winning by more than 18 seconds. Spicer is a graduate of Northampton High School.
