WALTHAM, Mass. – Men’s basketball guard Gabe Moton of St. Petersburg, Fla., and fencers Adam Mandel of White Plains, N.Y. and Annabel Sharahy of Wayne, N.J. were named University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week for Dec. 9. It is the second UAA recognition of the season for all three athletes.

Moton, a senior, was Brandeis’ top scorer in all three games last week. In contests against Becker, Babson and Tufts, Moton averaged 23 points and 7.3 rebounds. He shot 19-31 from the floor (61.2%), 15-21 from beyond the arc (71.4%) and 16-17 at the line (94.1%). Overall this season, the transfer from Boston College is second in the UAA with 19.8 points per game and fourth in rebounding at 7.6. He is also in the top 10 in the conference in assists, three pointers made, and shooting percentage from the field, downtown and the charity stripe.

The men’s basketball team is 6-2 this season under head coach Brian Meehan. The Judges take on Amherst College, the defending national champion, at 7 p.m. tonight.

Mandel, a junior, led a men’s saber squad that won three of its five matches at the Brandeis Invitational on Sunday. He went 13-2 overall, including 3-0 performances against Johns Hopkins, St. John’s and Yale. This is Mandel’s 10th-career UAA Athlete of the Week honor. He is an All-American, earning the accolade with a 12th-place finish in men’s sabre at the 2013 NCAA Fencing Championships in San Antonio.

Sharahy, a rookie, earned her second conference award in just three career meets. The sabrist went 2-0 against Johns Hopkins, 3-0 against Yale, 2-1 against the Air Force Academy and 1-0 against St. John’s, helping lead the women’s saber squad to five wins in six matches.

Facing several of the best schools in the country, the men’s fencing team went 2-3 at the Brandeis Invitational, while the women’s team posted a 2-4 record. The Judges seem poised for another excellent season under head coach Bill Shipman, coming on the heels of a season in which both teams were New England champions, and three fencers qualified the NCAA Championships.

Moton is a 2010 graduate of St. Petersburg High School. He played in 63 games over his first two years at Boston College, including three starts before transferring to Brandeis last season. 

Mandel is a 2011 graduate of The Masters School, Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. He is the son of Drs. Eric and Karen Mandel, White Plains, N.Y.

Sharahy is a 2013 graduate of Newark Academy, Newark, N.J. She is the daughter of Norris and Tatiana Sharahy, Wayne, N.J.
