Baseball falls to Bowdoin, 11-3

WALTHAM, Mass. – Eight different Bowdoin College baseball players crossed the plate as the Polar Bears scored in seven different innings to defeat the Brandeis University Judges, 11-3, on Stein Diamond today to win their eighth straight contest.

Bowdoin (18-5), which entered the day ranked fourth in New England by the America Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), was paced by junior SS Chris McCann (Hopkinton, Mass.) and rookie 1B Joe Berte (Marlborough, Mass.). McCann was 3-6 with a double, two runs scored and three RBI. Berte went 2-4 at the plate with four RBI and runs scored. He hit his team-leading fourth home run of the season in the ninth inning.

Brandeis (15-9-1) outhit Bowdoin, 13-10, but the Judges, who had runners in every inning, left 13 men on base. Junior DH Jon Winston (Nanuet, N.Y.) went 3-5 at the plate with a double, while senior 1B Chris Navis (Walpole, Mass.) had two RBI. He hit a two-run double in the sixth inning that put the hosts on the scoreboard. Rookie RF Mike Alfego (Shrewsbury, Mass.) had a sacrifice fly for the other Brandeis RBI.

Bowdoin got all the scoring they would need for senior Will Waldrop (Houston, Texas) in the first two innings. McCann led off the game with a double, was bunted to third and scored on an infield grounder to the first baseman by senior CF Jared Lemieux (Readfield, Maine). With the bases loaded and two out in the second, McCann struck again, singling up the middle to plate two runs, with a third scoring on an overthrow.

Waldrop scattered eight hits in six innings of work, walking three and striking out two to improve to 4-0 on the season. Brandeis sophomore Tyler Robinson (Manotick, Ont.) suffered the loss, surrendering five runs (three earned) and striking out five while walking just one. Robinson also hit a batter.

Brandeis wraps up its five-game home stand tomorrow against Eastern Nazarene College at 3:00 pm, while Bowdoin is at Roger Williams University on Friday at 3:30.
