Dunphy, two others combine to blank Roger Williams, 7-0

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior Tim Dunphy (Cambridge, Mass.) scattered eight hits over eight strong innings of work and two relievers shut the door as the Brandeis University baseball team defeated Roger Williams University, 7-0, on Stein Diamond today.

After stranding two runners in the first inning and three in the second, Brandeis (6-3) got all the runs they would need in the third frame. With one away, sophomore CF Chuck Sheehan (Lexington, Mass.) singled, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Senior SS Zach Golden (Milton, Mass.) hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to give the Judges a 1-0 lead.

Roger Williams (3-6) had their chances to get to Dunphy, as the Hawks had base-runners in every inning. Brandeis turned double plays to get out of the first and fourth innings. In the fifth, after a leadoff double by senior catcher Travis Cooney (East Hartford, Conn.), the next three RWU hitters couldn't get the ball out of the infield. The Hawks mounted their biggest threat in the sixth, loading the bases with two outs on two walks and a single, but Dunphy got a strikeout to end the threat.

Brandeis expanded its lead in the sixth when they packed the sacks with no out. The first run of the inning came when sophomore 3B Malcolm Cone-Coleman (Portland, Maine) reached on an error, while senior C Phil Aurigemma's (Southboro, Mass.) suicide squeeze play produced two runs, with junior RF Ben Dashefsky (Massapequa, N.Y.) scoring all the way from second base. Brandeis added two more runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to ice the game.

Dunphy struck out two and walked two in his eight innings of work to improve to 2-2 on the season. Rookie James Collins (So. Boston, Mass.) and senior Aaron Landes (Southboro, Mass.) combined to get out through the ninth inning. At the plate, Golden went 3-3 with an RBI, a walk, a sacrifice fly and two runs scored. He is now hitting .514 for the season. Sheehan went 2-4 with an RBI, two runs scored and three stolen bases to take the team lead with four on the season. Junior DH Jon Winston (Nanuet, N.Y.) was the only other multiple hitter with a 2-3 performance.

For Roger Williams, sophomore lefty Mike Malcolm (Brockton, Mass.) suffered the loss, falling to 0-2 on the season. He allowed seven hits and five runs (two earned) in 6.1 innings, striking out seven and walking two. Sophomore RF Bobby Criscuolo went 2-3 with a stolen base, while senior 2B Andrew Lippincott was 2-4. Cooney's double was the Hawks' only extra-base hit.
