NEWPORT, R.I. (taken from an SRU press release) - Senior lefty
Tim Dunphy (Cambridge, Mass.) pitched a complete game while
scattering 14 hits as he led Brandeis University baseball to a 6-3
decision over Salve Regina University in non-league action in
Newport.
The Seahawks, No. 3 in the latest New England Intercollegiate
Baseball Association (NEIBA) poll, outhit the visitors (14-12), but
grounded into three double plays. Dunphy started two of the
twin-killings on comebackers.
The Judges scored four runs in the 2nd (three unearned) and two
more in the 3rd inning. Junior RF Ben Dashefsky (Massapequa, N.Y.)
led off the 2nd with a single to right, moved to second when rookie
LF Dave Almeida (Bridgeport, Conn.) walked, and then scored when
the Seahawks committed an error on sophomore 3B Malcolm
Cone-Coleman's (Portland, Maine) sacrifice bunt. Senior 1B Chris
Navis (Walpole, Mass.) worked a bases- loaded walk for the Judges'
second run before sophomore CF Chuck Sheehan (Lexington, Mass.)
followed with a bunt single for the game's third run. Senior SS
Zach Golden (Milton, Mass.) brought home the fourth run on a sac
fly.
Salve Regina scored in its half of the second when junior RF Davin
Sirpenski
(Voluntown, Conn.) led off with a triple and came home on a
grounder by junior 1B Nicholas Zambrotta (Newport, R.I.).
Almeida was issued a one-out walk in the Brandeis 3rd and moved to
third on a Cone-Coleman single, with Cone-Coleman taking second on
the throw. Both Brandeis baserunners would score on a squeeze bunt
attempt from senior C Phil
Aurigemma (Westborough, Mass.), who landed safely at first on a
throwing
error from Seahawk rookie starting pitcher Justin Collett (South
Portland,
Maine).
Junior Matt Palmisano (Chicago, Ill.) came in relief for the
Seahawks and immediately induced a double-play grounder. The junior
righty, who lost his father to a heart attack just before the start
of the season, pitched scoreless ball the rest of the way while
striking out six Judges.
Salve Regina added solo runs in the 7th and 9th innings, but Dunphy
retired the final two batters of the game (both representing the
potential tying run) on groundouts. Sophomore 3B Matt Finlayson
(Higganum, Conn.) and junior LF Joseph Leafe (Manchester, N.H.)
both collected three hits apiece for the Seahawks.
