WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University baseball team
scored 14 runs over the first five innings today to cruise past the
visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology Leopards, 15-5, in the
Judges' home opener on Stein Diamond.
Brandeis (5-3) got 18 hits from 11 different players in the
contest, while eight of the nine starters recorded RBI. Senior SS
Zach Golden (Milton, Mass.) led the way with a 3-5 performance,
scoring three runs and driving in one. Junior 3B Jeff Bourdon
(North Adams, Mass.) went 2-5 with a game-high three RBI and a run
scored.
Brandeis senior 1B/CF Chris Navis (Walpole, Mass.) got the ball
rolling today by leading off the bottom of the first inning as part
of a 2-4 performance. It was Navis's first home run of the season,
the third of his career and helped Brandeis get off to a 5-0 lead
after one inning. The Judges added a round-tripper in the bottom of
the second from junior DH Jon Winston (Nanuet, N.Y.), who went 2-4
with two RBI, three runs scored and a double to go with his home
run. The two-run shot to left field was his third of the season and
the seventh of his career. With three circuit clouts this season,
Winston has already matched his career-high set as a rookie in
2004.
On the hill, Brandeis set an NCAA Division III record as 10
different pitchers combined for the victory. Senior lefty Tim
Dunphy (Cambridge, Mass.) earned the victory with a 1-2-3 fifth
inning, striking out two to improve to 1-2 on the season. Senior
Peter Goodridge (Salem, Mass.) and sophomore Tyler Robinson
(Manotick, Ontario) combined to strike out the side in the eighth
inning.
Wentworth (2-9) was paced by rookie LF Aaron LaPlante (Charlestown,
N.H.), who went 3-4 with a triple and a run scored, while classmate
1B Kris Landry (Haverhill, Mass.) was 2-3 with a run scored and an
RBI. The Leopards scored four runs in the sixth inning on a
bases-loaded single by Landry followed by a hit-batsman and two
wild pitches. Rookie SS Mike Rall (East Hampton, Conn.) drove in
WIT's last run on a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning.
Brandeis is next in action Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m., while
Wentworth takes the field Thursday at 3:00 p.m. at MIT.
