SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (taken from a WNEC press release) - Sophomore
lefty Chris Anderson (Moodus, CT) tossed a five hitter striking out
11 and allowing no walks to lead Western New England College to a
4-0 victory over Brandeis University in a non-conference game
Friday at Trelease Park.
Anderson was in complete control the entire way in raising his
record to 3-2 with his second shutout of the season. He retired the
last 10 batters and picked a runner off first base. Brandeis had a
.304 team batting average entering the contest.
Freshman right-fielder Chris Newell (Wallingford, CT) went 3-for-5
with a run and stolen base (his team best ninth of the season). He
also knocked in the first run of the game with a RBI single as the
Golden Bears took a 2-0 lead in the second inning.
Junior third baseman Josh Jacobs (Essex Junction, VT) had two hits
in four at-bats while junior center fielder Garrison Ward (Wyckoff,
NJ) had a sacrifice fly, run, and two RBI.
Western New England College, ranked second in the NEIBA Division
III Coaches Poll, added single runs in the fifth and sixth
innings.
The Golden Bears (26-8) split the season series with the Judges
after losing 13-7 on April 13 in Waltham.
Brandeis (17-10-1) had lead-off runners on base in the third,
fourth, and sixth innings, but couldn’t advance anyone past
second base as the Golden Bears turned two double plays. Sophomore
Mike Dax (Delmar, NY) (1-1) took the loss.
