WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University rookie pitcher Drew
Brzozowski (Concord, Mass.) scattered seven hits and struck out six
in 8.1 innings of work to improve to 4-1 on the season as the
Judges defeated visiting Becker College, 10-1, on Stein Diamond
today.
Brandeis (14-13) had four players register multiple hits, paced by
senior SS Zach Golden (Milton, Mass.), who went 2-5 with two
doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Golden scored the team's
first run on an error in the third inning and added a two-run
double in the seventh. Rookie DH Ryan Healey (Lynn, Mass.) was 2-4
with a run scored, while senior LF Jon Winston (Nanuet, N.Y.) and
rookie 2B John O'Brion (Portland, Maine) also had two hits each.
Rookie 3b James Likis (Cambridge, Mass.) and senior 1B Jeff Bourdon
(No. Adams, Mass.) each had two RBI. Bourdon knocked a two-run
single in the fourth inning, while Likis plated two with a double
in the seventh inning.
Brzozowski was outstanding on the hill for the Judges, giving up
just one earned run. He faced the minimum through five innings,
thanks to a double play in the first and rookie catcher Artie
Posch's (Hopedale, Mass.) arm, throwing out a runner trying to
steal in the fifth. Becker (7-18) stranded two runners in the sixth
inning and finally broke through in the seventh with an RBI
groundout by junior RF Josue Lopez (Manchester, Conn.).
Brandeis led, 3-1, headed into the seventh inning when they blew
the game open with seven runs. The Judges sent 11 men to the plate
as they batted around for the third game in a row and the ninth
time this season. Golden and Likis each had run-scoring doubles in
the frame. Senior RF Ben Dashefsky (Massapequa, N.Y.) added a
sacrifice fly and rookie Drake Livada (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) had
an RBI single. Likis also scored a run on a wild pitch.
Becker sophomore Ben Markle (Medfield, Mass.) suffered the loss. He
went 6.1 innings and allowed 11 hits and eight runs (seven earned.
Markle walked five and struck out two. The Hawks did not have a
multiple hitter, with Lopez picking up the team's only RBI and
rookie DH Kevin Robinson (Pittsfield, Mass.) scoring the only
run.
Brandeis is next in action tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. against Endicott
College, while Becker heads to UMaine-Farmington Saturday at 1:00
