Nine-run second lifts Brandeis past Case, 13-2

SANFORD, Fla. -- The Brandeis University baseball team scored nine runs in the second inning today as the Judges defeated Case Western Reserve University, 13-2, in seven innings in University Athletic Association (UAA) action.

After both teams scored single runs in the first inning, Brandeis (3-1, 2-1 UAA) sent 12 men to the plate in the second, with the first seven batters reaching base and scoring. Rookie 1B Ryan Healey (Lynn, Mass.) drove in the first run of the inning. Three batters later, sophomore DH Mike Alfego (Shrewsbury, Mass.) connected for a grand slam, his first career round-tripper. Senior Ben Dashefsky (Massapequa, Mass.), making his first start in center field, followed with a single. After Case retired the next two batters, rookie catcher Artie Posch (Hopedale, Mass.) singled home Dashefsky, and rookie 3B James Likis (Cambridge, Mass.) followed two batters later with a three-run home run that gave the Judges a 10-1 lead.

Dashefsky added a sacrifice fly in the third inning, while sophomore RF Dave Almeida (Bridgeport, Conn.) had an RBI single and senior Shane Butland (Columbus, Ohio) a pinch-hit sac fly in the fourth to close out the Judges' scoring.

Case (2-3, 1-2 UAA) scored its runs on an RBI ground-out by junior 3B Jamal Mahmud (Flemington, N.J.) in the first inning and a sacrifice fly by rookie RF Keith Lupton (Cortland, Ohio) in the sixth. The game was called after seven innings because of the UAA's 10-run rule.

Offensively, Healey led the way for the Judges with a 3-4 performance with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Senior Jeff Bourdon (No. Adams, Mass.) went 2-4 with three runs scored, while Likis was 2-2 with three RBI and three runs scored to go with his home run. Alfego finished the day 2-3 with all four RBI coming on his grand slam.

The Brandeis pitching staff got a fine performance from rookie Drew Brzozowski (Concord, Mass.), who went five innings in his first collegiate performance. He struck out two and allowed just one hit and one unearned run. Senior Peter Goodridge (Salem, Mass.) and junior Mike Dax (Delmar, N.Y.) each tossed an inning of relief, with Goodridge striking out two and allowing one earned run and Dax keeping the Spartans off the board.
