Case upsets Brandeis, 11-5, as Judges finish second in UAA

SANFORD, Fla. – The Brandeis University baseball team finished second today at the UAA Championships after suffering their second loss of the tournament, to Case Western Reserve.

Brandeis (4-3, 3-3 UAA) found themselves in an 8-0 deficit after the top of the fourth inning. However, the Judges rallied for three runs in the bottom of the inning, receiving RBI from three different players. Following freshman 1B Ryan Healey’s (Lynn, MA) hit by pitch to lead off the inning, senior 2B Jeff Bourdon (North Adams, MA) smacked a double, putting both runners in scoring position. With one out, freshman 3B James Likis (Cambridge, MA) knocked a single up the middle, scoring Healey. With the bases loaded and a second run having been scored, sophomore DH Mike Alfego (Shrewsbury, MA) hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Likis from third.

Case Western senior P J.R. Doolos went the distance, throwing six scoreless innings and scattering the Judges’ eleven hits in his complete game performance. Doolos finished the day with four strikeouts and four earned runs in receiving the win. The Spartans’ pitcher was heavily supported by the relentless offense, led by senior 2B Kevin Sudnik who went five-for-six, scoring two runs and contributing two RBI. Helping out his own cause, Doolos went three-for-five with three RBI and one run scored.

Junior P Tyler Robinson (Manotick, Ontario) started the game for the Judges, contributing 3.1 innings of work in his second outing of the season. Robinson finished the day with three strikeouts and six earned runs. Freshman P Drew Brzozowski closed out the game for the Judges. Brzozowski pitched an impressive five innings, surrendering but one earned run while scattering eight hits. He finished with three of the Judges’ eight strikeouts in the game.
