SANFORD, Fla. -- Senior LF Jon Winston (Nanuet, N.Y.) and rookie
catcher Artie Posch (Hopedale, Mass.) each had a double and a home
run today and junior lefty Tyler Robinson (Manotick, Ont.) threw
his third career complete game as the Brandeis University baseball
team upended 19th-ranked Emory University, 9-4, in the Judges'
University Athletic Association opener.
Brandeis (2-0) wasted no time in jumping on Emory (12-2) rookie
Adam Gumm, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first on Winston's
first home run of the campaign. The Judges added three more runs in
the third to take a 5-0 lead. With two away, Posch went deep for
his second blast of the season. Senior 2B Jeff Bourdon (No. Adams,
Mass.) followed with a double, scoring on a single by rookie 3B
James Likis (Cambridge, Mass.). Rookie 1B Ryan Healey (Lynn, Mass.)
doubled to plate Likis and give the Judges a five-run
advantage.
Emory answered in the top of the fourth on a lead-off double by
rookie CF Tommy Dugan, who advanced to third on a fly ball and
scored on an attempted double-steal. The Eagles trimmed the lead to
5-4 with three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Junior
leadoff hitter and 3B Frank Pfister reached on an error and scored
two batters later on a single by senior SS Brandon Custer. Custer
came home on a pinch double by senior Bo Schill, while rookie Will
Gumm added a pinch RBI that got EU within one, but Robinson retired
Dugan on a fly ball to right to end the inning.
Brandeis got the runs back in the bottom of the seventh, taking
advantage of a pair of walks to junior CF Chuck Sheehan (Lexington,
Mass.) and senior SS Zach Golden (Milton, Mass.), who both scored
on a two-run double by Winston. Posch followed with an RBI double
of his own, and Likis singled home the final run of the game, as
Robinson worked out of a two-on, one-out jam in the eighth to
strike out two of the last three batters in the ninth inning.
Winston finished with the big day for the Judges, going 2-4 with
two runs scored and four RBI, while Posch was 2-3 with two RBI and
two runs scored. Both had a double and a home run. Likis and
Sheehan also turned in multi-hit games. On the hill, Robinson
tossed his first complete game since 2005, scattering six hits and
striking out five while walking just two, allowing four runs (two
earned).
Brandeis takes on the University of Rochester tomorrow morning at
10:30 a.m. in their second UAA contest of 2007.
