PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Brandeis University baseball team split
a doubleheader with host Roger Williams University today in a pair
of pitchers' duels. The Judges dropped the opener, 2-0, before
taking the second game, 1-0, in nine innnings.
In game one, Roger Williams sophomore James Lydon tossed a
seven-inning two-hitter to defeat Brandeis junior Tyler Robinson
(Manotick, Ont.), 2-0. The Hawks got all the scoring they needed in
the second inning on a two-out single by sophomore CF Radd Deweese.
They added an insurance run in the fifth on a one-out single by
sophomore RF Jamie Dahill.
Brandeis got a couple of runners as far as second base, but
stranded runners there in the fifth and sixth innings, squandering
a two-out double by senior RF Ben Dashefsky (Massapequa, N.Y.) in
the sixth.
Lydon struck out six and walked just one while allowing the two
Brandeis hits to improve to 3-0 on the season. Robinson allowed two
earned runs in 5.1 innings, giving up five hits and striking out
five. He falls to 1-2 on the season.
In game two, four Brandeis pitchers scattered nine hits, while RWU
rookie Dan Roberge allowed just three, but the Judges made their
only hit in the ninth inning count, turning it into the only run of
the game. With two away in the second extra frame, rookie 1B Ryan
Healey (Lynn, Mass.) walked and was replaced by pinch-runner Nick
Gallagher (Southboro, Mass.) That brought up rookie catcher Artie
Posch (Hopedale, Mass.), who knocked a double that scored Gallagher
from first. Sophomore James Collins (So. Boston, Mass.) came in and
allowed a lead-off single in the bottom of the ninth, but the
runner was stranded on second as Collins earned his second save of
the season.
Rookie Drew Brzozowski (Concord, Mass.) went 6.1 innings in the
start. He scattered eight hits, stranding RWU runners in six of the
seven innings he started. Junior Mike Dax (Delmar, N.Y.) picked up
the win with a 1-2-3 eighth inning.
Brandeis moved to 5-4 on the season with the split, while Roger
Williams is now 5-7.
