Salem State rallies to down Brandeis baseball, 5-3

WALTHAM, Mass. – Salem State junior pitcher Bo Gillette (Malden, Mass.) threw 143 pitches in eight innings today, shutting down the Brandeis University offense after the fourth inning as the visiting Vikings rallied for a 5-3 victory over the Judges on Stein Diamond today.

Brandeis (9-8) got on the board first with two runs in the second inning. Junior CF Chuck Sheehan (Lexington, Mass.) plated senior SS Zach Golden (Milton, Mass.) with an infield groundout to open the scoring, while senior RF Ben Dashefsky (Massapequa, N.Y.) singled back through the box to give the hosts a 2-0 lead. Senior LF Jon Winston (Nanuet, N.Y.) added to the lead in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out RBI single that brought home Dashefsky, who had singled and stole second.

Salem State (9-9) tied the game in the top of the fifth against Brandeis rookie starter Drew Brzozowski (Concord, Mass.). Rookie DH Ben Garlington (Rochester, Mass.) homered to deep right field on the first pitch of the inning to get the Vikings on the board. After a single and a fielder's choice, junior junior catcher Marc Crovo (Melrose, Mass.) doubled to left field to put runners on second and third. Sophomore SS Devin Davis (Abington, Mass.) singled up the middle to cut the Brandeis lead to one.

SSC caught a tough break when junior LF Bobby Celentano's (Peabody, Mass.) line drive hit Davis in the leg for the second out of the inning, but Viking junior 1b Ken Luongo (Wilmington, Mass.) hit a soft pop-up that fell just out of a diving Brzozowski's reach. First base was uncovered, allowing Crovo to score the tying run.

Gillette settled down after the contest was tied, allowing runners in three of the next four innings, but none of them past first base thanks to a double play ball in the sixth and a caught stealing in the eighth.

Salem State scored the winning run in the top of the sixth. Palmieri led off with a single up the middle and stole second. He scored just ahead of the throw home on Luongo's single to left field. The Vikings tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth on a bases-loaded hit batter. Brandeis had two runners on in the bottom of the frame, but junior Scott Lynch (Malden, Mass.) struck out two batters for his first save of the season.

Brandeis was led by Dashefsky, who went 3-5 with two stolen bases, an RBI and a run scored. Winston and Golden also had two-hit performances. Brzozowski suffered his first collegiate loss to fall to 2-1 on the season. He allowed nine hits and four runs (three earned) in six innings of work, striking out two and walking three.

Gillette improved to 3-1 with eight innings of nine-hit ball. He fanned five and walked four, allowing three earned runs. Offensively, the Vikings were paced by Celentano's 4-4 performance with a double. Davis was the only other multiple hitter for SSC, going 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Brandeis is next in action Tuesday when they host Tufts University at 3:00 p.m., while Salem State has a MASCAC doubleheader tomorrow at noon at Bridgewater State College.
