WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University baseball team sent 12 men to the plate in the sixth inning, scoring eight runs, to lead the Judges past visiting Springfield College, 9-6, on Marcus Field today.

Brandeis (6-6) trailed, 3-0, headed into the bottom of the big inning. Springfield (2-9) got a single run in the fourth on an RBI hit by junior catcher Justin Nussey (Westminster, Mass.) and two more in the top of the sixth on a two-run home run by senior DH Doug Maier (Long Valley, N.J.). It was just the fourth plate appearance of the season for Maier.

The Judges put the first two batters of the bottom of the sixth on a single and a hit batter. Rookie catcher Artie Posch (Hopedale, Mass.) got the scoring started with an RBI single, while senior 2B Jeff Bourdon (No. Adams, Mass.) cut the Pride lead to 3-2 with a single of his own. After an error loaded the bases, rookie 1B Ryan Healey (Lynn, Mass.) struck the big blow for the Judges, a base-clearing double to center field that put the Judges ahead, 5-3. After getting bunted to third, Healey scored on a triple by sophomore DH Mike Alfego (Shrewsbury, Mass.). Alfego scored what proved to be the winning run on a ground out by senior RF Ben Dashefsky (Massapequa, N.Y.). Classmates Zach Golden (Milton, Mass.) and Jon Winston (Nanuet, N.Y.) had back-to-back singles to produce the eighth run of the inning.

The Judges got another run in the seventh on an RBI grounder by junior CF Chuck Sheehan (Lexington, Mass.). Springfield cut into the lead in the eighth with a two-out three-run home run by Nussey off of Brandeis starter Tyler Robinson (Manitock, Ont.) after he had allowed two walks. Junior Mike Dax (Delmar, N.Y.) got out of the inning safely, and sophomore James Collins (So. Boston, Mass.) picked up his third save of the season in the ninth, inducing a game-ending double play.

Healey led the Judges at the plate, going 2-4 with a double, three RBI and a run scored. Alfego was 2-4 with a triple, an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base. Golden rounded out the multiple hitters with a 3-5 performance with two runs scored and a double. Robinson struck out nine Springfield hitters in 7.2 innings of work, giving up seven hits and six runs (three earned). He improves to 2-2 on the season.

Nussey was the top offensive performer for the Pride, going 3-4 with four RBI, a run scored and his first home run of the season. Maier finished up going 1-2 with a home run and three runs scored after drawing three walks. Sophomore James Feist (Allentown, Pa.) went 5.2 innings, giving up eight runs on 11 hits. He struck out three and walked none in suffering his first loss of the season.
