SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (courtesy SC sports info) – Jimmy
Lisowski pitched a complete game victory to lead the Springfield
College baseball team to a 5-3 victory in game #1 of a doubleheader
against Brandeis this afternoon at SC’s Berry-Allen Field.
Tyler Robinson then returned the favor by pitching a complete game
victory as Brandeis won by an identical 5-3 score in game #2.
Brandeis (9-7) jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the
first of Game #1, when the first three batters each laced a single.
Sophomore 1B Drake Livada drove in the initial run.
But a double by junior DH Ryan Tetreau plated two runs in the
bottom of the second for the home team, putting Springfield (7-13)
into the lead. The Pride scored two more in the third on three
hits, a hit batsman, and a ground out.
Brandeis closed the gap to 4-3 in the top of the sixth on two
singles, a wild pitch, a sac fly by sophomore C Artie Posch, and a
ground out. Springfield added one more on a walk and a stolen base
by junior CF Drew Michael, then an RBI-single by senior second
baseman Tim Romeo.
Lisowski, a junior lefty, struck out six and walked none in a
7-inning complete-game win. Lisowski is now 2-1. Brandeis used six
pitchers. Starting righty Rocco Toppi took the loss. He is now
3-2.
Junior SS Jamie Mackie went 2-for-3 for
the Pride. Junior OF Mike Alfego, sophomore 2B John O’Brion,
and Livada all had two hits in game #1 for the Judges.
In the second game, Brandeis jumped out to a 3-0 lead with two in
the first and one in the third. In the first inning, after the
first two batters singled and doubled, one run scored on a ground
out by Livada, and a second scored on a sac fly to center by junior
RF Dave Almeida. In the third, Alfego led off with a double and
scored on an RBI single by Almeida.
Springfield came back with a run in the fourth and two in the
sixth. In the fourth, Mackie led off with a double and came around
on a single by junior DH Travis Turgeon. In the sixth inning,
senior 1B Casey Federico led off with a single. He was doubled to
third by senior C Justin Nussey. One out later, both runs scored on
a single to right by senior right fielder Rex Cone. Michael then
walked, putting the go-ahead run at second. But Robinson, a senior
lefty, got tough, getting two straight
batters to ground to shortstop. Springfield also had the winning
run on second base with one out in the seventh, but Robinson
induced an easy pop-up and then came up with a clutch strike
out.
In the top of the eighth, with one out and a man on first, what
looked like a perfect double play ball was picked up by the second
baseman and thrown into left field. With runners on first and
third, Brandeis capitalized when freshman LF Tony Deschler executed
a perfect suicide squeeze, putting the Judges ahead, 4-3. Brandeis
then scored on another error, putting them up by a 5-3 count.
In the bottom of the inning, Springfield got leadoff singles by
Turgeon and Cone. But again Robinson proved equal to the task by
getting three straight outs. The game ended when Posch made a great
one-handed foul ball catch as he was headed into the Springfield
dugout.
Robinson went all eight innings for Brandeis, improving his record
to 3-1. He gave up three runs, all earned, and nine hits. He struck
out seven and walked four. Senior lefty Michael Searles picked up
the loss and is now 0-2. SC starter Jacob Feist hurled the first
4.2 innings, allowing six hits and three runs, all earned.
