SANFORD, Fla. -- Brandeis University sophomore 3B Drake Livada (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) hit a three-run home run, the first of his career, as part of a five-run first inning and senior pitcher Tyler Robinson (Manotick, Ont.) struck out nine to help make the lead stand up as the Judges defeated fifth-ranked Emory University today, 10-7, in University Athletic Association (UAA) action. With the win, the Judges clinch at least a share of the UAA title with a 4-2 record. Emory and Washington University are both 3-2 with one game left to play.

Brandeis (5-2, 4-2 UAA) batted around in the first inning against Emory starter Brian Cournoyer, as six of the first seven batters reached base. Rookie LF Tony Deshler (Pepperell, Mass.) singled to lead off the game, followed by a walk to sophomore 2B John O'Brion (Portland, Maine). Junior RF Dave Almeida (Bridgeport, Conn.) followed with an RBI single up the middle to start the scoring. After a bunt by sophomore catcher Artie Posch (Hopedale, Mass.), Livada followed with his blast to deep left-center field to put Brandeis up 4-0. Back-to-back doubles by junior DH Mike Alfego (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and junior 1B Nick Gallagher (Southboro, Mass.) pushed the lead to 5-0.

Emory (12-5, 3-2 UAA) got a solo home run by senior 2B Joe Roth to lead off the second, who then added an RBI double in the third to trim the lead to 5-2. Brandeis got those runs back in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Deshler and a single by Almeida to centerfield that greeted Emory hurler Matthew Katten. Deshler added his ninth RBI of the season with a single in the fifth inning that proved to be the winning run after Roth and rookie 1B Andrew Cohn had driven runs in the top of the frame to cut the lead to 7-4. Alfego singled in two runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the lead 10-4.

Emory got two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to trim the lead to 10-7. After Cohn drew a lead-off walk to open the ninth off Brandeis junior Pat Collins (So. Boston, Mass.), rookie Pat Nicholson (E. Walpole, Mass.) came on to retire the side and earn his first collegiate save.
