WALTHAM, Mass. - The Brandeis University baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to #6 Trinity College (Conn.) in Sunday afternoon's matchup. The Judges had a 4-2 advantage going into the sixth inning of the first game before giving the game up and losing 10-4. In the second game, the Bantams scored eight runs in the top of the fifth to go on to win, 13-3. With the loss, the Judges drop to 15-21 while Trinity moves to 24-4 on the year.
The story on the day was the duo of the Bantams' three and four spot hitters. Senior C Sean Killen (Greenfield, Mass./Greenfield) and junior 1B Kent Graham (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) went 7-for-15 combined with six runs scored and eight RBI.
Brandeis senior P James Collins (s. Boston, Mass./ BB&N) gave up only three earned runs in five innings with a win lined up before Trinity gave him the no-decision. He struck out four and gave up seven hits. Brandeis picked up a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the second inning after Trinity had scored one run in each of the first two innings. The highlight of the inning was a two-RBI double by Brandeis C Artie Posch (Hopedale, Mass./Hopedale) to put the Judges ahead 3-2. Posch was then driven in by a sacrifice fly to centerfield by rookie CF Sean O'Hare (Southampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional).
Trinity would be held scoreless until the top of the sixth inning as the Bantams scored three runs to go up 5-4. They added to their 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh as they put up a five spot to go onto win, 10-4. The Bantams starting sophomore P Andrew Janiga (Ellington, Conn./Ellington) threw a complete game with seven strike outs and scattering five Brandeis hits.
In the second game Brandeis fell down early, as Trinity scored three runs in the first two innings. Brandeis got on the board in the bottom of the third to score two runs on a O'Hare two-run home run to centerfield. The Bantams answered again in the top of the fifth inning. They would score eight runs on seven hits as 12 batters stepped to the plate in the inning.
The Judges have five more games remaining and look to rebound at Amherst on April 27, at 4:00 p.m.
