PEORIA, Ariz. - On February 20, Brandeis' University baseball team suffered their first loss of the season to Washington and Lee University, 7-4.  With the loss, Brandeis falls to 2-1 on the year, while Washington and Lee moves to 3-0 with the victory.

The Judges produced the first run of the game in the first inning on a single by sophomore DH Pat Nicholson (East Walpole, Mass./Walpole) which drove in junior 1B Drake Livada (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) who reached on an error.  After the first inning, the Judges were shut down by Washington and Lee starting pitcher Andrew Henderson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace).  Henderson pitched seven-and-a-third innings, allowing only one earned run on four hits, and one walk.  Once going down 1-0 in the first inning, his team's offense helped him out as they put up five runs in the first three innings. 

Going into the sixth inning the Judges were down 7-1.  Brandeis senior 2B Nick Gallagher (Southboro, Mass./St. John's) started the offense with a single to centerfield.  Livada followed that up with a double to centerfield which scored Gallagher from first base. Rookie 3B Jon Chu (Hollis Hills, N.Y./Bronx Science) produced the third hit of the inning.  Chu and Livada would not cross the plate as Henderson closed the door by getting Nicholson to ground into an inning-ending double play. 

It remained a 7-2 score as both teams produced no offense in the seventh and eighth innings.  In the ninth Brandeis, came up a little short as they scored two runs on three hits and left a man on base.  The three hits were produced by sophomore C Zach Wooley (Argyle, Texas/Jesuit College Prep.), senior CF Mike Alfego (Shrewsbury, Mass./St. John's) who moved Wooley to third on a double, and sophomore LF Jeff Dennis (Newton, N.H./Sanborn Regional) who had an single to left field that drove in Wooley.  Rookie RF Kenny Destrempts (Mashpee, Mass./Mashpee) then grounded out to second base which scored Alfego.  This was the last run Brandeis would get across the plate as the contest finished with a final score of 7-4.

Brandeis will travel to Florida to start up UAA competition on March 10-14 and play five games in four days.
