WORCESTER, Mass. – The Brandeis baseball team hit a season-high three home runs today, but it wasn’t enough to rally the Judges past the home-standing Worcester State College Lancers in a 12-4 defeat. The Judges fall to 8-17, while WSC improves to 17-5-1 on the season.
After Brandeis starter Dylan Britton (Poughquag, N.Y./Arlington) got out of a bases-loaded jam in the second, Worcester State struck for two unearned runs in the third, thanks to a lead-off error. The Lancers scored on a sacrifice fly by SS Tyler Magnell and a single by DH Corey McDonald.
The Judges got one run back in the fourth inning, when rookie LF Chris Ferro (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) bashed his team-leading fourth home run of the season to left-center field. Unfortunately for the Judges, the Lancers answered in a big way in the bottom of the fourth, scoring seven runs off of three Brandeis pitchers. The big blows were a pair of three-run home runs, one by McDonald and one by 2B Paul Rodriguez. It was the third of the season for both players.
After the hosts tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the seventh, the Judges knocked their last two homers. In the top of the eighth, junior Tony Deshler (Pepperell, Mass./Lawrence Acad.) stroked the first pitch of the frame out to right-center. It was Deshler’s first of the campaign and the seventh of his career. In the ninth, junior Eric Rosenberg (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) launched the third of his career, a two-run job to left to close out the scoring.
With tomorrow’s game against Suffolk cancelled, Brandeis is back in action Thursday at Johnson & Wales.
