Nicholson leads Judges to  7-1 victory over Farmingdale St.

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Brandeis University baseball team recorded their first win of the season, a 7-1 victory over Farmingdale State College on Friday. The win improved the Judges to 1-3, while Farmingdale starts their season off 0-1.

The Judges scored their first run in the second inning.  Senior SS Tony Deshler (Pepperell, Mass./Lawrence Acad.) was walked on on the first at bat of the inning.  A by sophomore Nick Cortese (Guaynabo, P.R./Baldwin School of Puerto Rico) advanced Deshler to third, but it was a single from Senior 1B Eric Rosenberg (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) that got the RBI.

In the fourth, Rosenberg doubled and rookie LF Brian Ing (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) followed, to put the Judges up, 2-0, at the bottom of the fourth. Brandeis added two more runs in the fifth inning. Junior catcher Chris Ferro (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) singled in junior 3B Jon Chu (Hollis Hills, N.Y./Bronx High School of Science) and scored on base hit by sophomore RF Andrew Cohen (Beverly Hills, Calif./Montclair Prep School).

Farmingdale scored their only run at the top of the fifth.  Sophomore OF Ryan Rubenstein (Deer Park, N.Y./St. Anthony's) hit a triple, and was batted in when junior Ryan McAllister (Miller Place, N.Y./Rocky Point) reached on an error.

Brandeis scored their final three runs over the seventh and eighth innings.  Chu got on base on a error and was advanced to third on a single by Ferro.  With a steal and error, Ferro got to third base, giving Chu the fifth run of the game. Deshler popped up to first for the RBI.  In the eighth, for the Judges final run, Ing was walked onto first and batted to third with singles from juniors OF Sean O'Hare (Southampton, MA/Hampshire Reg.) and catcher Kenny Destremps (Mashpee, Mass./Mashpee).  Chu was walked for the RBI, final run of the game.

The Judges had 10 hits, with three different Judges each posting two hits, including Chu and Ferro who also had two runs and one RBI a piece. Cohen had two RBI.  Senior Pat Nicholson (E. Walpole, Mass./Walpole) pitched the first seven innings with six strikeouts, allowing only one run in 23 at bats.
