McGrath pitches 6th straight win to send Judges past the Jumbos, 10-3

WALTHAM, MASS. – Senior John McGrath (New York, N.Y./Trevor Day) pitched his sixth straight win this afternoon to lead the Brandeis University men's baseball team past Tufts University, 10-3.  McGrath's six wins are the most in a season by a Brandeis pitcher since Tim Dunphy went 10-3 in 2006.  With the win the Judges improve to 19-12 on the season while the Jumbos end a 14-game winning streak, falling to 17-5-1 on the season.

After three scoreless innings, Tufts got on the board first in the top of the fourth.  With the bases loaded and only one out, senior LF Ian Goldberg (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) singled to plate junior RF Sam Sager (Cranston, R.I./Moses Brown).  The Judges answered back with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning, when rookie 3B Brian Ing (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) doubled to send junior 2B Sean O'Hare (Southampton, Mass./Hampshire Reg.) home and tie the game.

In the top of the fifth, with one runner on base, senior CF David Orlowitz (Wakefield, Mass./Groton School) homered to left field to put the Jumbos up  by two.

Not to be denied, Brandeis cam back in the bottom of the inning with two runs of their own.  Senior 1B/P Pat Nicholson (Walpole, Mass./Walpole)  and sophomore RF Chris Ferro (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) singled to put runners on first and second and senior DH/1B Eric Rosenberg (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) walked to load the bases.  Junior catcher Kenny Destremps (Mashpee, Mass./Mashpee) hit a long single for 2 RBI to knot the score for the second time.

The Judges scored seven more runs over the next three innings, while keeping their opponent scoreless.  In the bottom of the sixth, with Ing on second, senior CF Tony Deshler (Pepperell, Mass./Lawrence Acad.) doubled for 1 RBI.  Sophomore LF Nick Cortese (Guaynabo, P.R./Baldwin School of Puerto Rico) followed up with a single to put Deshler to scoring position.  Nicholson reached on an error by the RF, putting Deshler over the plate.

In the bottom of the seventh, Deshler hit his second double of the night for an RBI.  Cortese followed with another single, plating Deshler to give the Judges a 7-3 lead.  Brandeis closed out the game with three more runs in the bottom of the eight.  O'hare singled for 2 RBI and Ing hit into a double play to send Destremps home and give the Judges a 10-3 decision.

The Jumbos were paced by Orlowitz and his 2 RBI homerun.  Junior C Matt Collins (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) went 3-for-5 with a double while Sager, sophomore 1B Tom Howard (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Southside) and senior 2B Frank Petroskey (Dallas, Texas/Cooperstown Central (NY)) all had two hits a piece.

For the Judges, Deshler lead the team going 4-for-6 with two doubles for  2 RBI. O'hare was 3-for-6 for 2 RBI and Destremps posted two hits for 2 RBI.

Junior Jake Crawford (Boise, Idaho/Boise) took the loss on mound, pitching the last two innings, allowing eight hits and five runs.  Sophomore Alex Cronkite had the best appearance for Jumbos, tossing the first three innings, allowing just four hits, no runs and striking out one batter.

McGrath, 6-0 from the hill, pitched seven full innings, allowing 11 hits and three earned runs with five strikeouts.  Nicholson tossed two innings of relief, allowing just two hits and no runs with two strikeouts.
