WALTHAM, Mass. – Three Brandeis University baseball players were named to the University Athletic Association (UAA) All-Tournament Team yesterday. Seniors Brian Ing of Sandwich, Mass., and Colin Markel of Scarsdale, N.Y., as well as junior Tom McCarthy of Yonkers, N.Y. were all honored.

Ing was the only player in the tournament honored for both his pitching and hitting. The senior co-captain had a 3.38 ERA on the mound, as he picked up a huge win against Washington University. He hurled eight innings of one-run ball against the Bears before pitching to three batters in the ninth and getting charged with two more earned runs. Ing was 10th in the conference in ERA, and he was sixth in batting average, hitting at a .429 clip for the week. He had 12 hits, six runs and three RBIs. He reached base five times against Case Western at the start of the week, going 3-for-3 with a pair of walks. Ing also finished the week fourth in the league in hits, seventh in total bases, ninth in on base percentage and eighth in slugging.

Markel left Florida with a 1.64 ERA (third in the UAA) and a 1-0 record. He was dominant in a March 11 win over Rochester, going the distance and allowing just two runs in a 3-2 win for the Judges. Markel also pitched two innings against Emory, allowing a pair of unearned runs. The senior closes out his UAA career with a 3.38 ERA in conference games.

McCarthy batted .448 on the week, fourth best in the UAA. His 13 hits were also third in the conference, and he led Brandeis with both six runs and six RBIs. He was fifth in the UAA in total bases, on base percentage and slugging percentage. His best game came during the Judges' win against WashU, when he went 4-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

Brandeis finished 2-6 at the UAA Tournament, and is 6-8 overall on the year. Head coach Pete Varney is in his 33rd year at the helm for the Judges. The team's games today and this weekend have been postponed, but Brandeis is scheduled to play at Salem State on Monday.
