WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University baseball team was unable to overcome an early bout of wildness as the Judges dropped an 11-4 decision to Rhode Island College today. Brandeis falls to 8-10-1 on the season, while RIC evens its record at 9-9-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Brandeis struck first in the bottom of the first on an RBI double by senior RF Ryan Healy (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon).
  • The Judges were unable to score any further as RIC threw a second runner out at the plate on the play.
  • RIC scored the game's next five runs on just two hits in the third and fourth innings. The Anchormen benefitted from four walks and five hit batters in those two frames.
  • The two hits were an RBI single in the third by catcher Nate Cahoone (Westerly, R.I./Westerly) in the third and a two-run single that took a bad hop at second base by 3B TJ Lynch (South Kingstown, R.I./South Kingstown).
  • Brandeis got one run back in the fourth when Healy stroked his second double of the game and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior catcher Connor Doyle (Avon, Conn./Avon Old Farms).
  • RIC again cut down a run on the basepath, denying a second sac fly in the inning when left fielder Edward Apice (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) gunned down a run at the plate.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Healy led off with his third two-bagger and scored when sophomore Luke Zeccola (Garden City, N.Y. / Chaminade) blasted his first home run of the season and the fourth of his career.
  • The Anchormen got the runs right back on a two-run double by Apice in the seventh, and they blew it open in the eighth when Lynch blasted a grand slam to left field.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Brandeis outhit RIC, 13-12, but their six walks and five hit batters proved too costly.
  • Senior CF Liam O'Connor (Avon, Conn./Avon) was 3-5 with a run scored, while classmate Healy finished 3-4 with three doubles and two runs scored.
  • Grad student 3B Rob Trenk (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) also had two doubles on the day.
  • RIC's Lynch had the biggest day at the plate, going 3-4 with a walk, a double, a home run and seven RBI.
  • Apice had three RBI for the visitors.
  • Zeccola, who hit the two-run home run, suffered the loss after giving up three earned runs on just one hit in three innings of work. He struck out four, but also walked three and hit four batters. He was making his season and Brandeis pitching debut.
  • Junior Anthony Nomakeo (Westfield, Mass. / Northfield Mt. Hermon) went the next 4.1 innings, giving up eight hits and eight runs (seven earned), also with four Ks and three walks. He also hit one batter.
  • RIC sophomore Daniel Greaves (Warwick, R.I./Veterans Memorial) went five innings and gave up 10 hits, but just four runs to earn the win. He struck out three and walked one to improve to 1-1 on the season.
  • Classmate Myles Levy earned a save by tossing the final four scoreless innings and allowing just three hits with two Ks and a walk.
