Baseball pushes win streak to 8 with 8-3 win over Framingham State

WALTHAM, Mass. (courtesy Framingham State sports information) – The Brandeis University Judges plated six runs in the sixth inning including a grand slam from rookie 2B Benjamin Bavly (Newton, Mass./Newton South) as they defeated Framingham State University 8-3 in non-conference action this afternoon at Stein Diamond.

With the win, the Judges Improve to 16-15-1 on the year and extend their winning streak to eight in a row, their longest since 2002. The 16 wins is the most by a Brandeis team since 2011. The Rams fall to 10-20 with the loss.

FSU grabbed the early lead with a run in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Kyle Pileski (Bristol, Conn.) led off the game with a single and scored on a single to right by freshman Kyle Dembrowski (Natick, Mass.).

After allowing one run and three hits in the opening inning, Brandeis University starter Sam Miller (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) settled in and kep the Rams off the board for five straight innings while allowing just two hits over the span and striking out eight, including six looking. The eight Ks matched his career-high.

The Judges took the lead in the bottom of the third inning on a two run single to center off the bat of senior Ryan Healy (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon).

Brandeis opened the game up in the bottom of the sixth sending 10 men to the plate and scoring six runs to take an 8-1 advantage.  Healy led off the inning with a triple and an intentional walk gave the Judges runners on the corners.  Grad student DH Rob Trenk (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) followed with a sinking single to left that scored Healy.  An infield hit by junior SS Jay Schaff (Cheshire, Conn./Xavier) with the bases loaded plated the second run of the frame. Bavly  delivered the big hit in the inning with a grand slam to center. The slam was his second of the week and his team-leading fourth home run of the season.

The Rams tacked on single runs in the top of the seventh on a Pileski ground out and in the ninth on an RBI double from sophomore Matt Brockett (Guilford, Conn.).

The Judges were led by Bavly who went 4-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored, while Trenk added three hits.  Healy finished the game with three hits and two RBI.

Brockett led the  Rams at the plate going 3-for-4 with three doubles and an RBI, while Dembrowski finished with a pair of hits.

Miller earned the win going seven innings and allowing two earned runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts. Freshman Kyle Hodgson (Berkley, Mass.) took the loss going 5.2 innings and surrendering eight runs, all earned, on 11 hits with five strikeouts.

Brandeis will look for their ninth win in a row on Tuesday afternoon at Babson College. FSU plays Salem State in a MASCAC doubleheader the same day.
