BOSTON, Mass. – The Brandeis University baseball team was unable to hold off visiting Emory University in their final chance at a first UAA win of the season as the Judges fell to the 24^th-ranked Eagles, 3-2, in the second game of a doubleheader today. Brandeis dropped the opener as well, 10-0. The games were played at Monan Park on the campus of UMass Boston because of wet field conditions at Stein Diamond.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE

• The Judges had as many hits in the first game as they did in both of yesterday's losses at the hands of the Eagles with six.
• Unfortunately, the visitors jumped on the board with five runs over the first two innings to jump out to an early lead.
• EU handed starter Luke Emmett a 3-0 lead thanks to an RBI triple by 2B Jeff Ronpirin, who scored two batters later to make it 3-0.
• The Eagles scored twice in the second without a hit, drawing four consecutive walks to plate one run, while a Ronpirin grounder to third plated another.
• The Judges were able to get two runners into scoring position in the fourth inning thank to a lead-off single by senior SS Jay Schaff (Cheshire, Conn./Xavier) and an Emory error, but Emmett got a grounder to third to stifle the attack.
• Emory tacked on three more in the fifth inning, with Ronpirin slugging his second RBI triple of the game, and two in the top of the seventh.
• Brandeis had a chance to break through on the scoreboard in the bottom of frame, loading the bases with one out, but Emory's Charlie Redovian got a popup and fly to left to close out the win.
• Emmett improved to 4-2 on the season with six scoreless innings of work, allowing five hits and one walk along with four strikeouts.
• Senior Liam Coughlin (Townsend, Mass./Lowell Catholic) suffered the loss, falling to 0-3, after giving up six runs (three earned) in four innings.
• Ronpirin was the big hitter on the day for EU, finishing 2-3 with two triples, two runs scored and three RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO

• The Judges got a fantastic starting performance from rookie Tim Lopez (Brooklyn, N.Y. / East Side Community), who held Emory scoreless through five innings and hitless into the fourth.
• Lopez struck out five and worked around six walks to stymie the Eagles.
• Brandeis broke out of their scoring slump in the first inning, when rookie2B Victor Oppenheimer (West Hills, Calif. / Chaminade) led off with a double, got bunted to second and scored on a single by classmate Dan O'Leary (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield).
• Senior Ryan Tettemer (Westfield, Mass./Suffield Acad.) followed with a single and the Judges had runners at second and third, but Emory starter Rhett Stuart got a strikeout to escape further damage.
• The teams had base runners in every half inning between the second and fifth innings, but were unable to score.
• The Eagles finally got to Lopez in the top of the sixth inning, who issued a leadoff walk to Ronpirin.
• First-baseman Bubby Terp followed and launched the first home run of the series over the high left field fence in Monan Park.
• The Eagles got two runners into scoring position with one out against reliever Kyle Shedden (Spencer, Mass./David Prouty), but the rookie got a strikeout and a liner to left to keep it a 2-1 lead.
• Brandeis got one of the runs right back in the bottom of the inning. Rookie catcher Jacob Stone (Natick, Mass./Natick) got hit by a pitch with one out.
• He was bunted to second, then replaced by pinch runner Bradley Bousquet (Athol, Mass./Athol).
• Emory senior relief standout Kyle Monk came on to try to end the threat, but Oppenheimer bounced a ball through the left side, and Bousquet scored easily as the throw from left was cut off.
• In the top of the seventh, Emory put three early runners on base with two walks and a hit batter, but the first of the three was erased on a 6-4-3 double play.
• With runners on first and second after the next two hitters reached without a hit, EU leftfielder Wilson Morgan delivered a single to center that plated the winning run.
• Monk retired the side in order for the first time all game for either team in the bottom of the seventh to close out the twinbill, 3-2.

TEAM RECORDS

• The Judges fell to 1-13 overall, 0-8 in the UAA. Emory improved to 23-11, 6-6 UAA.

UP NEXT

• Brandeis will finally play its first home game on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. when they play host to Bowdoin. The game was scheduled to be played in Brunswick, Maine, but the Polar Bears' field is still unavailable.
• The Judges' next UAA trip will be next weekend to Cyclones Park in Coney Island to meet NYU.
