WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University graduate student Mason Newman of New Rochelle, New York, and junior fencer Maggie Shealy of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, have been named the University Athletic Association Baseball Pitcher and Women's Fencer of the Week, respectively.

Newman earned UAA honors for the second time in his career, the first coming as first-year in 2018. He tossed a complete-game shutout against Wentworth on March 23rd, the first of his career. It was his third career complete game, but first of nine innings, having gone seven and eight innings in his previous two. Newman scattered eight hits, did not walk a batter and struck out a career-high nine. The Judges defeated the Leopards, 8-0.

The 9-2 Judges return to action this week with a non-conference game at UMass Boston tomorrow afternoon before heading to Case Western Reserve for their first UAA games of the season.

Shealy claimed UAA Athlete of the Week honors for the ninth time this season after earning All-America honors at the 2022 NCAA National Collegiate Fencing Championships. Shealy was the top women's Division III finisher, placing eighth in the saber competition to earn second-team All-America honors. Shealy finished with a record of 14 wins and nine losses. After starting 12-3 on the first day of action, she went 1-3 in both the fourth and fifth round of action on Friday. Shealy was just one touch away from victory in four of her six losses, dropping them by 5-4 scores. Shealy's eighth-place finish is just the fifth top-10 finish for a Brandeis woman at the NCAA Fencing Championships, while her 14 wins were the third-most ever by a Judge on the women's side. Combined with teammate Tony Escueta's six points on the men's side, Brandeis finished in 17th place with 20 points, second among Division III teams.

Newman is a 2017 graduate of New Rochelle High School.

Shealy is a 2019 graduate of East Chapel Hill High School.
