WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University baseball team had trouble dealing with a potent Emory University offense today, as the Eagles swept a University Athletic Association doubleheader from the Judges, 31-4 and 31-7. The visitors set a UAA record for runs in a game in the opener and tied it again in the second contest.

TEAM RECORDS

  • Brandeis: 5-16, 1-6 UAA.
  • Emory: 19-10, 8-2 UAA.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Across the two games, which were shortened to seven innings because of the UAA's 10-run rule, the Eagles scored runs in all but two of their plate appearances.
  • Emory had a pair of 12-run innings, one in each contest, as well as two nine-run frames and two with six runs.
  • The visitors had 49 hits in the two contests – 23 in the first and 26 in the second – including 22 for extra bases (nine homers, 2 triples, 11 doubles).
  • Sophomore 3B Jack Halloran was the standout at the plate for Emory. He went 9-for-10 with 10 runs scored and 15 RBI in the two games, slugging four home runs – three in the first game and one in the second – along with three doubles. He also walked twice and had a sacrifice fly.
  • CF Ellis Schwartz was 7-for-9 and just missed hitting for the cycle twice, falling a single short in the opener and missing the triple in game two, in which he had two doubles. Schwartz drove in nine runs combined.
  • Brandeis's top offensive player was leadoff hitter and left fielder, senior Steven Simon (Hanover, Mass./Hanover). Simon went 4-for-4 with three runs scored in game 1 and in game two hit a grand slam in the fifth inning – his second homer of the season and sixth of his career.
  • Brandeis starters Asher Kaplan (Jamaica Plain, Mass. / Boston Latin) and Marc Maestri (Katonah, N.Y. / Somers) took the losses on the mound, falling to 3-2 and 2-2, respectively.
  • Emory's Joey Bock and Ryan Reynolds upped their records to 3-3 and 5-2.

UP NEXT

  • The Judges and Eagles will wrap up their series tomorrow at noon, an hour later than the originally scheduled start time.
