ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Brandeis University baseball team dropped the second game of a four-game University Athletic Association series at Washington University in St. Louis today, 11-1. The second game of today's scheduled doubleheader was postponed because of rain, and the teams will play twice tomorrow instead.

TEAM RECORDS

  • Brandeis: 5-20, 1-9 UAA.
  • Washington University: 23-8, 7-3 UAA.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Judges got on the board first in the second inning. With two out, first-year 3B Alex Kim (Basking Ridge, N.J. / Seton Hall Prep) singled to first base and moved to second on an errant throw to the pitcher trying to cover. Senior SS Drew Michaud (Madison, Conn / Xavier) walked, and sophomore DH Griffin Bodow (Tempe, Ariz./Tempe Prep) grounded to short. Michaud beat the throw to second, and Kim charged home to score. Bear starter Sebastian Guzman got a strikeout to avoid further trouble.
  • WashU got all the scoring they would need in the bottom of the third when 3B Clayton Miller drilled a three-run home run to left field off of Brandeis senior starter Asher Kaplan (Jamaica Plain, Mass./Boston Latin).
  • The hosts put up crooked numbers in each of their next three at-bats as well, scoring four in the fourth, four more in the fifth and two in the sixth.
  • WashU RF Kaden Bernhard drove in four of those runs, two coming on a two-run home run in the fifth and two more on a single in the sixth as the game reached an 11-1 score and was halted due to the UAA's 10-run rule..
  • The Bears held the Judges to just four more hits the rest of the way, only advancing one runner to reach second base after they reclaimed the lead.
  • Brandeis finished with just six hits, two coming from Michaud.
  • Kaplan took the loss to fall to 3-3 on the season. He went five innings, allowing 10 hits and nine earned runs. He walked three and struck out three.
  • Guzman went the distance, allowing six hits and one earned run. He struck out five and walked just one in seven innings. He improved to 4-0 on the season.

UP NEXT

  • The Judges and Bears will look to close out the series tomorrow with two games of a doubleheader, including a makeup of today's Game 2.
