WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University baseball team dropped a pair of University Athletic Association contests this afternoon on Stein Diamond. The Judges fell to the Spartans 27-2 in the opener and 13-2 in the nightcap.
TEAM RECORDS
- Brandeis: 5-25, 1-13 UAA.
- Case Western Reserve: 20-12, 9-5 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Spartans scored runs in nine of their 14 at-bats throughout the doubleheader.
- In the opener, they pounded out 21 hits and drew nine walks and a hit batter. They recorded five runs in each of the first two innings and two runs in the fourth.
- In the fifth inning, CWRU set a UAA record by scoring 15 times, as they sent 19 batters to the plate. 2B Jasiah Harris walked and singled twice in the inning.
- In game two, the Spartans scored four runs in the first and fifth innings, three in the sixth and one each in the third and seventh.
- RF Nick Harms wielded the big bat for the visitors, going 4-for-7 with seven RBI and seven runs scored in the two games. He homered in both ends of the doubleheader and had a double in the opener.
- Outfielder Trey Haley scored eight runs on the day – five in the first and three in the second.
- Brandeis had 10 hits and four runs in the two games. Senior CF Sam Nugent (Mansfield, Mass. / Mansfield) and sophomore catcher Justin Keeler (Seymore, Conn. / St. Joseph's) each had a hit in both games and one double on the day.
- On the mound, Reece Marley took the win in game one for CWRU, improving to 5-2 with five innings of one-hit ball. He struck out nine and did not walk a batter, facing just one batter over the minimum in his stint.
- Evan Faxon moved to 3-3 on the campaign in the second game. He also went five innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs. He struck out eight and walked four.
- Brandeis junior Sean Decker-Jacoby (Los Angeles, Calif./Vistimar) took the loss in game one, lasting four innings and giving up 12 hits and 12 runs (nine earned) with a walk and three Ks.
- Nugent came out of the outfield and tossed two innings of shutout ball with four strikeouts.
- Senior Asher Kaplan (Jamaica Plain, Mass./Boston Latin) shouldered the loss in game two, falling to 3-4. He threw 4.1 innings of 10-hit ball, allowing nine earned runs. He struck out seven and walked two.
