WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University baseball team finished up a weekend series today against visiting Case Western Reserve with a second doubleheader. The Spartans completed the series sweep, winning the first game 10-0 in seven innings and the second game 15-12.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the first game, the Spartans opened up the scoring in the top of the third inning when third baseman Zack Carinci singled to left field, bringing the shortstop Owen Levinson home.
- Case Western starter Kyle Gearding had a no-hitter going into the fourth inning until junior second baseman Mike DiCenso (Cranston, R.I. / Moses Brown) singled to left field.
- However, the Judges could not put anything else together in the inning and DiCenso was left on base.
- After a couple quiet innings from both teams, Case Western had a big sixth inning.
- With two outs, the Spartans scored eight on seven hits in a run that included three doubles and two triples.
- The Spartans scored their final run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from pinch hitter RJ Christie.
- Gearding took the win for Case Western, while graduate starter Marc Maestri (Katonah, NY / Somers) took the loss for the Judges, falling to 2-4 on the season.
- The second game started out quickly for both teams.
- After giving up a run on an error in the top of the first, senior shortstop Drew Michaud (Madison, Conn / Xavier) knocked a double to left field, scoring Dicenso and senior center fielder Sam Nugent (Mansfield, Mass. / Mansfield).
- Case Western responded in the second inning with a two-RBI double and a fielder's choice that scored Levinson to take the lead 4-2.
- The Judges tied the game back up in the bottom half of the second with an RBI fielder's choice from DiCenso and an RBI double from senior third baseman Brian King (Palos Verde, Calif. / Palos Verde).
- First-year right fielder Josh Liu (Irvine, Calif. / Portola) gave Brandeis the lead back in the third inning with a double that scored Michaud.
- In the top of the fourth, the Spartans scored on four straight at-bats to take the lead back 8-5.
- Both teams continued to score, but Case Western held the lead until the bottom of the eighth inning.
- In the eighth, sophomore catcher Justin Keeler (Seymore, Conn. / St. Joseph's) got the scoring started for the Judges on a single to right field that scored DiCenso.
- After King scored on a wild pitch, senior designated hitter Griffin Bodow (Tempe, Ariz. / Tempe Prep) brought Keeler home with a single to left field.
- Liu broke the tie again when he hit into a fielder's choice that scored Michaud to make the score 12-11.
- The Spartans ultimately took the lead back for good in the top of the ninth and came to their final total of 15 on a two-RBI single by center fielder Matt Trout.
