BABSON PARK, Mass. (taken from a Babson College press release)
-- Head coach Brian Meehan recorded his 200th career victory as the
Brandeis University Judges defeated host Babson College, 76-66, in
a non-conference men's basketball game on Tuesday night. With the
win, Brandeis remained unbeaten at 5-0, while the Beavers slipped
to 2-3.
Trailing by six with 11 minutes remaining in the second half,
Babson used an 8-0 run fueled by six straight points from junior
Greg Bush (East Islip, N.Y.) to take a 53-51 lead with nine minutes
to play. However, that would prove to be the Beavers' final lead of
the game, as Brandeis responded with a 15-4 run over the next seven
minutes to go up 68-55. Babson would get as close as seven twice in
the final two minutes, but the Judges eventually claimed the 76-66
win.
Junior Kwame Graves-Fulgham (Amherst, Mass.) led Brandeis with 14
points on 5-of-6 shooting, including five points during the game's
decisive run. Junior Steve DeLuca (Merrimack, N.H.) and first-year
Kenny Small (Stratford, Conn.) each added 10 points for the Judges,
who shot 54.9 percent (28-for-51) from the floor in the
victory.
For Meehan, his 200th career victory came in his fourth season at
Brandeis and 11th season overall. He now boasts a career mark of
200-79, and his winning percentage of .717 ranks 17th among active
Division III coaches (minimum five years coaching) and 18th
all-time (10-year minimum). Meehan went 160-39 in seven seasons at
Salem State and has now squared his record at Brandeis at
40-40.
Babson was led by junior Greg Bush (East Islip, N.Y.), who finished
with a game-high 18 points while shooting 6-for-11 from the field
and 6-for-6 from the line. Junior Brian MacDonald (Beverly, Mass.)
also shot well, hitting 6-of-9 for 12 points, while sophomore Zach
Etten (Hollis, N.H.) chipped in with 11 points and five rebounds.
The Beavers shot 51.0 percent (26-51) from the field in the loss,
but hit just 4-of-16 from beyond the three-point arc.
