Chicago snaps No. 6 men's hoops' seven-game winning streak , 74-66

CHICAGO, Ill. -- The host University of Chicago men's basketball team outscored visiting Brandeis University, 19-6, over the final nine minutes of the contest as the Maroons upset the No. 6 team in the nation, 74-66, in a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest in the Gerald Ratner Center today. With the win, Chicago improves to 17-7, 10-3 in the UAA, while Brandeis, who saw its seven-game winning streak come to a close, falls to 19-5, 9-4.

The first half was a back-and-forth first half that saw four ties and seven lead changes. After UC scored the first five points of the game, Brandeis went on a 16-2 run to take a nine-point lead on a Joe Coppens (Rockland, Mass.) 3-pointer with just over six minutes gone. The Maroons answered with 17-6 run of their own over the next nine minutes, reclaiming the lead, 24-22, on a Matt Corning trifecta. Brandeis eventually took a 39-36 lead into the locker room, thanks to 12 points from senior forward Stephen Hill (Brighton, Mass.) and 11 from sophomore forward Terrell Hollins (Springfield, Mass.). The duo also combined for 12 rebounds, as the Judges owned an 18-12 advantage on the boards. Nate Hainje led the Maroons with 10 points.

In the second half, the first eight minutes saw three more ties, though the Judges never let UC go ahead. After the Maroons knotted the game at 52-52 with 11:42 on the clock, Hollins and Hill scored six of the game's next seven points to give Brandeis a 58-53 lead. After the teams traded scores on their next possessions, the Maroons scored the next four points of the game from the free throw line to cut the lead to 60-59. They reclaimed the lead on a Hainje 3-pointer, but Coppens answered to give the lead back to the Judges.

On UC's next possession, took advantage of good offensive rebounding, getting five shots off before Matt Corning gave the hosts the lead for good with a jumper. The teams traded misses on their next two possessions before the Maroons took advantage of a busted play, as a slowly bounding ball found its way into the hands of a wide-open Jake Pancratz, who buried the triple to give the Maroons a 67-63 lead. A Hill lay-up cut the margin back to two at the 1:49 mark, but Corning answered on the other end with 1:26 left. Hollins was fouled on an offensive rebound on Brandeis's next trip, but hit just one of two. The Maroons were able to hit five in a row from the charity stripe while Brandeis missed four from downtown for the final score of 74-66.

Hill led the Judges with a career-high 21 points on nine-of-11 from the floor and three-of-four from the line. He also had seven rebounds. Hollins ended up with 18 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Sophomore Andre Roberson (Springfield, Mass. ) led the Judges with four assists off the bench. Brandeis shot just 32% from the field in the second half (10-31), including just 1-14 from long range.

Chicago put four players in double figures, including game-high 24 points from Hainje, who had 14 in the second half. He also grabbed a team-high six boards. Corning finished with 18, thanks to nine-of-11 from the line, while Adam Machones had 11. Pancratz finished with 10 points and a game-high five assists. The Maroons outscored Brandeis from the line, 21-12, and had 18 assists on 22 baskets.

Brandeis will go for their second-straight 20-win season and team-record 10 UAA wins next weekend against NYU at 3 p.m.
