WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University men's basketball junior guard Derek Retos of No. Attleboro, Mass., has been named the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Player of the Week for Jan. 22.

Retos was a key factor in the Judges' back-to-back University Athletic Association (UAA) road wins at the University of Chicago on Jan. 18 and at then-13th-ranked Washington (Mo.) University on Jan. 20. He had 11 points in a 59-55 win in the Windy City on Friday night, hitting on 3-of-5 from 3-point range, and was the team's third-leading scorer.

Two days later in St. Louis, Retos scored all of his game-high 23 points in the second half as the Judges claimed a 67-62 victory. He hit 6-of-9 from beyond the arc and 7-of-10 overall from the floor against the Bears in the second half. His 23 points were scored in 16 minutes of action off the bench and were 11 more than the entire WashU reserves combined. With his six trifectas, Retos became just the seventh player in school history with 150 for his career, moving into sixth place on the Judges' career list with 154.

The loss was just the eighth in the past 100 games when the Bears were leading at halftime and represented just their 13 home UAA defeat in the previous 13 seasons. The Judges became just the sixth team to complete a road sweep of Chicago and Washington University, and the first program to accomplish the feat twice, having done it in 2010.

Overall, Retos is second on the Judges in scoring this season, averaging 11.1 points per game. He started the team's first nine games, when he averaged 10.6 points per game, but has increased his scoring to 11.7 ppg since coming off the bench in the last seven. He is 65th in NCAA Division III with 2.6 3-pointers per game and fourth nationally in 3-point percentage at 49.4%. Retos also leads the Judges with 17 steals.

Overall this season, under 10th-year head coach Brian Meehan, the Judges own a 14-2 record and are ranked 19th in the most recent d3hoops.com Division III national poll. They lead the UAA in scoring defense (60.9 ppg, 32nd in Division III) and field-goal percentage defense (38.6%, 24th nationally). The Judges have won seven in a row and are headed to UAA contests at Emory University on Friday evening at 8 p.m. and second-ranked University of Rochester on Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m.
