WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's basketball team could not overcome red-hot shooting from visiting Washington University tonight, as the Bears defeated the Judges, 88-62, in a University Athletic Association contest in Red Auerbach Arena tonight. Brandeis falls to 9-14 overall, 3-9 in the UAA. WashU salvages a split of the season series with the Judges and improves to 13-10, 5-7 UAA.
Washington shot 66.1 percent from the floor for the game (37-56), connecting on 64.5% in the first half (20-31) and 68% in the second (17-25). The Bears were 53.8% from 3-point range (7-13) for the game, including 71.4% in the second half (5-7).
Individually, Brandeis was led by sophomore forward Jordan Cooper (Weston, Fla./Sagemont School), who had 12 points and a career-high five steals. He also tied for team-high honors with four rebounds. Junior guard Tim Reale (Mason, Ohio/St. Andrews School, R.I.) added 11 points and four assists.
Senior Colby Smith (No. Andover, Mass./No. Andover) led Brandeis with five assists off the bench. The Judges reserves outscored WashU's, 24-14, thanks to eight points each from sophomore Carlin Haymon (Boston, Mass./Rivers School) and rookie Ian Roach (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Bedford Academy). Roach's eight were a career-high.
WashU was led by junior forward Clinton Hooks, who scored a career-best 26 points on 10-of-14 from the floor, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range, and 2-of-3 from the line. The Bears had two double-double performances. Sophomore center David Schmelter scored 18 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, while sophomore guard Kevin Kucera tallied 10 points and career-high 10 assists. WashU also saw sophomore Andrew Sanders scored 18 points and classmate Jake Knupp tally 10.
WashU outscored Brandeis, 54-26, in points in the paint and dominated the boards, 41-17, collecting 11 boards on their own end to just 12 for the Judges. The Bears' 88 points was tied for most allowed by the Judges all season.
Brandeis is back in action on Sunday morning when they play host to the University of Chicago at 11 a.m. Washington University is at NYU Sunday at noon.
