Men fall to Rochester, 78-52

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's basketball team was unable to complete the season sweep against the visiting University of Rochester Yellowjackets, as UR took a 78-52 University Athletic Association decision today in Red Auerbach Arena. With the loss, the Judges fall to 11-9 overall this season, 4-5 in the UAA, while Rochester improves to 16-4 overall, 6-3 UAA.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Judges got off to a decent start, leading 15-11 six-and-a-half minutes into the game after a putback from rookie center Nolan Hagerty (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth).
  • At that point, Rochester scored 18 unanswered points as the Judges went more than 10 minutes without a basket before another Hagerty offensive rebound.
  • Six different UR players contributed to the scoring column in the run, led by five from Patrick Benka.
  • Rochester led by as many as 20 points in the stanza before taking a 40-21 lead into the locker room.
  • The 'Jackets opened the second half with another big run, 14-1 over the first 3:50, establishing a 54-22 lead on a Brendan O'Shea 3-pointer.
  • The visitors would lead by as many as 34 points before a late Brandeis run made for the 26-point final margin.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Brandeis's Eric D'Aguanno (Saunderstown, R.I./St. Andrews School) led all scorers with 13 points, 11 coming in the second half. He also led the Judges with four rebounds and three assists.
  • Hagerty finished with a career-high 10 points. He also grabbed three offensive rebounds.
  • Sophomore Lawrence Sabir (Providence, R.I./LaSalle Academy) matched D'Aguanno with three assists, while sophomore Austin Clamage (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) had three steals in a battle against his brother, UR senior Ryan.
  • Rochester had just one player score in double digits, senior Andrew Lundstrom, who had 12 points. The Yellowjackets had five other players scored eight or nine points.
  • Ryan Clamage led UR with six rebounds, as the visitors dominated the boards, 35-16. Eleven different Yellowjackets grabbed multiple rebounds, compared to just four for Brandeis.
  • Clamage also tied with Jacob Wittig for game-high honors with four assists.
  • For the game, Rochester shot 64.6% from the field (31-48), a season-high allowed by the Judges. Brandeis connected on just 38.9% from the field (21-54).
  • The Judges won the turnover battle, 20-14, and converted the advantage into a 24-19 edge in points off the miscues.
  • Brandeis falls to 0-4 all time at home on Super Bowl Sunday when the Patriots are in the Big Game.

  • The Judges close out their home schedule next weekend with games against Carnegie Mellon on Friday night at 8 p.m. and Sunday afternoon against Case Western Reserve at noon.
