Waltham, MA - The Judges never trailed, thoroughly beating John Jay 75-49 in the first round of the ECAC tournament. In their first postseason appearance since 2011, Brandeis played one of their most complete games of the season, holding John Jay to nearly 20 points below their average, while the offense exceeded their own average. Next up for the Judges will be the ECAC Quarterfinal against Marywood University on Friday, March 1.

How It Happened 

• Brandeis scored the first five points of the game and never looked back. A first-half three-point barrage from Corey Sherman (Penn Valley, PA/Lower Merion) and Collin Sawyer (New London, Conn./Jonathan Law) helped the Judges jump out to a 20 point lead after one half.
• John Jay was able to keep it close for the first few minutes, but back to back buckets by Sherman allowed the Judges to begin extending the lead.
• Grad student Latye Workman (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bedford Academy) and sophomore Chandler Jones (Springfield, Mass./Springfield Commonwealth Academy) combined to end the first half on a hot streak, pushing the lead to 20.
• Brandeis nearly shot the lights out of Red Auerbach Arena in the first half, shooting 47.4% (18-38) from the field and a remarkable 44.4% (8-18) from beyond the arc. The stingy defense held John Jay to only 25.9% (7-27) from the floor and 27.3% (3-11) from three-point range.
• The second half saw more of the same, as Brandeis could not be stopped on offense and their defense held John Jay in check.
• After a Sawyer three made the score 53-33, John Jay would not score for nearly six minutes of game time, allowing the Judges to continue extending the lead.
• The Bloodhounds never came particularly close in the second half, as an Eric D'Aguanno (Saunderstown, R.I./Saint Andrews) three-pointer with 1:03 gave the Judges a 28 point lead, the largest of the game.

Inside the Box Score

• The Judges put on an absolute show from three-point range as Sawyer finished 6-12, Sherman went 4-6, Jones and D'Aguanno both added a three each. The team as a whole shot 42.9% (12-28) from beyond the arc.
• D'Aguanno now has 179 made three-pointers for his career, only 8 behind Kevin Olsen ('09) for fourth all-time at Brandeis
• Sawyer led the team with 21 points, Jones and Sherman added 19 and 16, respectively.
• Despite only scoring 6 points, Workman stuffed the stat sheet by adding 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks, all while playing turnover-free basketball.
• The Judges aggressive style of defense showed up in a big way, resulting in 6 steals and 6 blocks
• John Jay's Doug Levy was held in check for the first half, but one of the top double-double machines in the country added another as Levy went for 16 points and 10 rebounds. No other John Jay player scored more than 9.
• The 49 points scored by John Jay was their lowest output of the season and is the second lowest allowed by Brandeis all season.
• In his first season as head coach, Jean Bain has now taken the Judges to the second round of the postseason for the first time since 2011.
