Men handle UMass Dartmouth, 79-68, to improve to 5-0

NO. DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's basketball team kept their best start to a season since 2010 going tonight with a 79-68 victory over UMass Dartmouth on the road thanks to a balanced attack that put four players in double figures in scoring for the third-straight game.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Judges led nearly wire-to-wire in this one, trailing only after the Corsairs hit the first bucket of the game.
  • Brandeis held UMD without a field goal for a stretch of nearly nine minutes in the first half, turning a 4-all contest into a 19-7 lead on a 3-pointer by first-year Quron Zene (Weston, Conn./IMG Acad.) with 8:36 to go before halftime.
  • The Judges led by as many as 19 points after back-to-back trifectas from sophomore Toby Harris (Durham, N.C./Durham Acad.) made it 28-9 with 5:33 left in the first.
  • The hosts clawed within 11 points, but a late 3-point barrage from Zene, Harris, and senior Dylan Lien (Northborough, Mass./Northborough) made it 41-21 before a late Corsair trifecta set the score at 41-24 at the break.
  • The Corsairs came out hot in the second half, scoring the first 10 points to close within seven points at 41-34 just 2:39 into the stanza.
  • Brandeis responded with a driving lay-up by junior David Perez-Miralles (Miami, Fla. / Riviera Prep) and another Zene trifecta to get the lead back to double digits, 46-34, at the 16:44 mark.
  • The Judges' lead swelled as large as 16 before UMD made one last run, scoring 10 in a row to cut the deficit to 68-62 with a pair of free throws from Isaac Percy.
  • Brandeis answered with six straight points by Harris to push the lead back to 12 with under two minutes to play at 74-62 before the 11-point final margin.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Harris scored 20 or more points in a game for the fifth-straight contest, finishing with a game-high 23. He hit 8-of-17 from the field, 4-of-8 from downtown, and 2-of-2 from the line.
  • Harris scored 14 of his 23 points in the first half.
  • Lien came off the bench to score a career-high 18 points in 36 minutes of action. He hit 5-of-10 overall, 4-of-7 from deep, and 4-of-4 from the line. He scored nine points in both stanzas.
  • Lien also grabbed a career-best seven rebounds.
  • Zene also scored a career-high with 16 points, coming on a perfect 4-for-4 performance from 3-point range. Zene tied with Lien for team-high honors with seven boards.
  • First-year guard Ethan Edwards (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Woodstock Acad.) made his first collegiate start and rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 points, reaching double digits for the fifth game in a row. He led all players with a career-high five assists as well.  
  • The Judges shot 44.8% from the field (26-58), while holding UMD to 40% (28-70). They also had a significant advantage from 3-point range, hitting 13 trifectas at a 59.1% clip (13-22), while holding the Corsairs to 17.4% (4-23) from downtown.
  • Paced by Lien, the Brandeis bench outscored UMass Dartmouth, 28-5.
  • UMD had four starters score in double digits, paced by Percy's 17 points and 14 from Dhalyn Sanders-Dyer, who also had four assists and four steals. Jackson Zancan and John Martins Jr. each had 13 points.
  • Theo Jadotte led all players with eight rebounds.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The Judges' 13 3-pointers were their most since hitting 13 against Emmanuel last Feb. 16.
  • Brandeis has won four in a row over UMass Dartmouth under coach Jean Bain.
