CHICAGO, Ill. – First-year guard Ethan Edwards (Brooklyn, N.Y./Woodstock Academy) capped an amazing finish for the Brandeis men's basketball team, scoring eight points in the final 55.9 seconds, including the game-winning 3-pointer with 5.8 seconds left, as the Judges rallied to defeat the University of Chicago on the road, 66-65, in a University Athletic Association contest.

TEAM RECORDS

  • Brandeis, 10-4, 2-1 UAA.
  • Chicago, 7-7, 0-3 UAA.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In a game that featured nine ties and six lead changes, it was Edwards and the Judges who finished strong.
  • The Judges trailed by six points with 5:34 left on the clock when UC hit a pair of free throws to make it 53-47.
  • It was still a five-point game at 56-51 with four minutes to go, but Brandeis sophomore Toby Harris (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) hit a 3-pointer and Edwards had a steal and lay-up on the next possession, tying things up at 56-all with 3:14 to go.
  • Chicago's Eamonn Kenah hit a trifecta, but Harris answered with another to make it 59-59 with 2:30 left.
  • Both teams got stops, and UC's Bryce Hopkins hit a jumper with 1:33 on the clock to give the Maroons a 61-59 lead.
  • Chicago forced a turnover on the next possession, but first-year Quron Zene (Windsor, Conn./IMG Academy) ran down the hosts' Joe Berry to block the shot, and Harris collected the rebound.
  • Edwards gave Brandeis the lead back with a traditional three-point play with 55.9 seconds on the clock that made it 62-61 in favor of the Judges.
  • UC's Arrish Bhandal backed down his defender to his a hook shot and give UC the lead back, 62-61, with 40.1 seconds to go.
  • Brandeis called timeout and called a play for Edwards, but his lay-up didn't fall, and the visitors were called for a foul on the ensuing rebound.
  • Kenah hit two free throws to make it 65-62 with 18.0 seconds remaining, but Edwards was able to get to the line on the next possession.
  • Edwards hit the first of two, but his second rolled around the rim before falling out. That gave senior Dylan Lien (Northborough, Mass./Worcester Academy) a chance to pull down the offensive rebound. He found classmate Terrell Brown (Lowell, Mass./Proctor Academy) along the baseline, and Brown kicked it out to Edwards at the right elbow, and he buried a 3-pointer with two Maroons charging at him to give Brandeis the 66-65 lead with 5.8 seconds to go.
  • Chicago called one timeout immediately, then used another when they got the ball over half-court with 2.1 seconds left, and their last to avoid a five-second call as sophomore Griffin Wallbridge (Longmeadow, Mass. / Tabor Academy) defended the inbounds pass. The Maroons were able to get the ball in on their next attempt, but it was deflected by the Judge defense, keeping the hosts from getting off a final shot.
