WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's basketball team was tied at halftime and the end of regulation with #18 Emory, but the Eagles scored the only bucket of overtime to hang on for a 73-71 University Athletic Association victory today in Red Auerbach Arena.

TEAM RECORDS

  • Brandeis, 11-5, 3-2 UAA.
  • Emory, 13-3, 4-1 UAA, Ranked #18 in Division III by D3hoops.com

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The two squads were as even as could be for 45 minutes, as the game featured 13 ties and 11 lead changes.
  • The largest lead of the game for either team was six points. Brandeis had a 24-18 lead with 8:48 left in the first half on a 3-pointer by junior Ryan Power (Waltham, Mass./Waltham).
  • Emory looked to take a lead into the locker room, but Brandeis sophomore Toby Harris (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to make it a 36-36 tie.
  • Emory scored the first four points of the second half and did not trail in the early going. They took their largest lead with 11:32 to go in regulation on a lay-up by rookie Benjamin Pearce that made it 55-49.
  • Brandeis's defense held strong, keeping the Eagles scoreless for the next two minutes, with first-year Ethan Edwards (Brooklyn, N.Y./Woodstock Academy) and Harris hitting 3-pointers to tie the game at 55-all with 9:06 to go.
  • Harris added two more 3-pointers, connecting from downtown with 7:51 to give Brandeis its first lead of the second half, 61-60.
  • Neither team was able to get any traction, but a Harris dunk with 3:09 to play, followed by an Emory turnover and two Edward free throws put Brandeis ahead, 71-68.
  • Those were the last points the Judges would score, despite having a chance to pull ahead even further with another stop.
  • Emory's Cale Martins hit a 3-pointer from the left elbow with 1:11 on the clock. Both teams got stops on their next possessions. Despite EU grabbing an offensive rebound with one second to go on the clock, their desperation in-bounds play was off, sending the game into overtime.
  • In overtime, both teams got stops on their first two possessions before Emory's Mason Johnson scored what proved to be the winning basket with 3:37 remaining on a driving lay-up.
  • Both teams had chances to tie or extend the lead, but the defenses were stout, including a shot-clock violation forced by the Eagles with 2:26 to go.
  • Brandeis forced an Emory turnover with 27 seconds to go on the clock when Edwards deflected an Eagle pass off an opponent and out of bounds. After replay confirmed the call, Brandeis had a couple of decent looks from 3-point range, but could not get them to fall.
