Brandeis men close out season with 70-57 loss at NYU

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Brandeis University men's basketball team cut a 15-point deficit to five midway through the second half, but host NYU answered with a 10-0 run of their own as the Violets defeated the Judges, 70-57, in the regular-season finale for both teams in the Brooklyn Athletic Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Violets came out with some hot shooting in the first half, outshooting the Judges 60% (15-25) to 42% (13-31). The hosts hit 8-of-12 from beyond the arc compared to 3-of-12 for Brandeis in the opening 20 minutes as they took a 43-31 lead.
  • NYU took a 51-36 lead on the Judges on a Quinn Clark lay-up 3:18 into the second half, and the Violets were still ahead, 57-42, with 11:34 left in the game.
  • Brandeis scored the game's next 10 points, closing within 57-52 on a putback from rookie Quron Zene (Windsor, Conn./IMG Academy) with 8:08 remaining.
  • The Judges got a stop on their next possession, but couldn't convert. NYU responded with a 3-pointer from Nikola Lipovic, followed by a traditional three-point play by Clark and two Zay Freeney free throws to push the lead back to 13
  • Both teams went quiet from the field for the next two-and-a-half minutes before a Freeney bucket on an offensive rebound made it a 15-point game with 2:53 left, and the Judges could get no closer than 12 the rest of the way.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  •  Brandeis junior Toby Harris (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) tied for game-high honors with 18 points on 8-of-13 from the field with two 3-pointers. He also had five rebounds.
  • Junior David Perez-Miralles (Miami, Fla. / Riviera Prep) provided a spark of the bench for the Judges, netting a career-high 12 points in 22 minutes of action. He also had a game-high four steals.
  • Zene led Brandeis with seven rebounds, while junior Ryan Power (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) had three assists.
  • NYU was paced by Lipovic's 18 points, which came on 6-of-8 3-point shooting. He missed his only three 2-point attempts.
  • Quinn Clark added a double-double with 16 points and game-high 11 rebounds for the Violets. He hit 7-of-7 from the field.
  • Freeney led all players with five assists.
  • NYU was unable to keep up their hot shooting, finishing the game at 41.8% (23-55), a hair under Brandeis's 42.9% (24-56). The Violets had an 11-4 advantage in 3-pointers thanks to Lipovic, as well as a 13-5 scoring advantage from the free-throw line.
  • The Violets outrebounded Brandeis, 39-29, including 11-5 on the offensive glass, leading to a 13-5 advantage in second-chance points.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Brandeis and NYU split the season series after the Judges defeated the Violets, 81-61, earlier in the season in Waltham.
