WALTHAM, Mass. - Three members of the Brandeis University fencing team will represent the Judges at NCAA National Collegiate Championships at Penn State University from March 19 to 22 thanks to their performance at the NCAA Regional at MIT on March 8. Brandeis will send senior foil Will Friedman of Newton, Mass., sophomore saber Adam Austin of Dix Hills, N.Y., and sophomore saber Anna Hanley of Arlington, Mass., to State College, Pa., to face the top Division I, II and III fencers in the nation.

Friedman, who was a first-team All-Northeast Fencing Conference selection this season, will be making his fourth trip to the NCAA championships. He joins recent Brandeis Hall of Fame inductee Terence Gargiulo '90 as the only Judges to reach nationals every year of eligibility. Friedman finished eighth at the NCAA regional, going 4-2 in the first round and 2-2 in the second round to earn the eighth seed into the finals, where he went 5-6 with wins over two opponents from Columbia and one each from Brown, St. John's and MIT. Overall this season, Friedman went 46-30 against varsity opponents. He is looking to repeat as an All-American, after finishing in seventh place against Division I, II and III opponents at the NCAA National Collegiate championships last season.

Austin, who earned first-team All-Northeast Fencing Conference honors, is making his first trip to the NCAA championships. Austin had the Judges' top finish at regionals, placing fifth. He went 3-3 in the opening round and 2-2 in the second round, earning the 12^th and final berth into round 3 by one touch. In the final round, Austin went 7-4 with wins over three foes from Columbia, and one each from NYU, Vassar, Brown and the eventual regional saber champion from Harvard. Overall this season, Austin went 43-34 against varsity foes.

Hanley, the 2008-09 Northeast Fencing Conference women's Fencer of the Year, reached the NCAAs as an at-large selection after finishing 13^th at the regionals. Hanley went 4-1 in the first round and 1-3 in the second, just missing advancing to the finals, but her regular-season performance carried Hanley into NCAAs. She went 29-0 in NFC matches and 77-25 against varsity opponents in the regular season to lead the Judges in wins and winning percentage in 2008-09. A sophomore transfer from Sacred Heart University, this is her first trip to the NCAA championships.

Friedman is a 2005 graduate of Newton North High School. He is the son of Nina Mayer, Newton, Mass., and the late Fred T. Friedman.

Austin is a 2006 graduate of Commack High School.

Hanley is a 2007 graduate of Lexington Christian Academy. She is the daughter of Tim and Terry Hanley, Medford, Mass.
